Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
Intermediate Level
If you enjoy poetry, this class is for you! This English Language Arts class is tailored to use poetry as a jumping off point for analysis, discussion, and then writing.

*Daily Schedule:
Mondays: Meet/revisit the author lesson and discussion
Tuesdays: Read the poem of the week followed by discussion and in depth analysis of the poem (including figurative language, literary devices, author's purpose, poetic format, vocabulary, literary significance)
Wednesdays: Continuation of analysis and begin weekly writing prompt/topic
Thursdays: Continue the writing process
Fridays: Complete weekly writing, share, and discuss

*If a poem analysis is more in-depth, or if the writing process needs more time/attention, activities may extend into the following week as necessary.

Each week, following poetry analysis, we will work on writing.
Examples of writing for the week include:

-Write descriptively about stars or fireflies using figurative language and imagery.

-When in the city, the poet years for the peace he finds in the country. Write about a place you find peaceful and explain why it brings you peace.

-The world changes around us everyday; reflect on a change that you have observed and write a well written paragraph explaining what changed, why you think it changed (or why it had to change), and express how it makes you feel.

Some poetry refers to God (Christianity/Judaism) or other gods (Greek, Roman, etc mythology) and will be discussed in a secular manner purely to understand the poet's meaning and to understand social context.
Supply List
PDF's may sometimes be uploaded (mainly for reference), but otherwise, students should have a pencil to write with and a notebook to keep track of their writing.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
We will be reading poetry that has entered the public domain. My main resource will be poetryfoundation.org.

Hello! I am Miss Nicole and I teach English language arts, and reading. I have been honored to be awarded Teacher of the Year by my fellow faculty and voted "Most Caring" and "Gives the Best Advice" by my students! I earned my BA in English with a minor in French in 2006, and my certifications include Core Subjects (ELAR, Science, Math, and Social Studies) grades 4-8 and English as a Second Language. I have taught ELAR collectively for nine years: in public middle schools for six and for homeschooled families for three. Making reading and writing come alive for my students and challenging them to think outside the box is my favorite way to engage them in learning. Learning should be interesting and enjoyable for everyone! I consider myself a lifelong learner, and love learning new recipes, dance steps, and music as often as possible!
