20 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class mini, students will get to play the classic game "Mad Libs" and have a blast creating their own hysterical and wacky stories while they review key grammar concepts, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, singular and plural, and verb tenses. We will begin by reviewing these concepts briefly, then we will start generating our story. I will choose a story from the Mad Libs game. These are short, silly stories with blanks in them. These blanks are just labeled with parts of speech. To play, I will choose a story, but I will not initially tell them what it is about or read it to them. Instead, I'll call out the part of speech. For example, I may ask for a noun, a past tense verb, or an adjective. I will write the students' suggestions in the blanks. When all the blanks are full, I will read their story. The results are frequently hilarious and always surprising! A sample story from the Mad Libs book goes as follows: Before Play (Students will not know what the story is about, and I will only read the words in the brackets to them): "[exclamation]!" he said [adverb] as he jumped into his convertible [noun] and drove off with his [adjective] wife. After Play (I will read the finished story to students): "Ouch!" he said stupidly as he jumped into his convertible cat and drove off with his brave wife.
Learning Goals
Learners will have fun playing a game, get to know each other, get to know me as a teacher, and get a great review of grammar concepts in the form of a game.
Other Details
Supply List
I will provide students with a handout detailing the parts of speech and types of words and phrases we'll be using. We'll review them at the beginning of class as well, but this way students can familiarize themselves before class if they wish. (They absolutely do not have to.)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! Thank you for taking a look at my Outschool classes! I teach a variety of classes in reading, writing, and math for K-8 students and in writing for high school students.
I've known I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. I love helping other people succeed, and the moment when something goes from "hard and frustrating" to "so easy" is incredibly motivating for me. I've taught in public schools, worked as a substitute teacher, worked as a private tutor, and taught English online, but my real passion is working with individuals and small groups, because I love finding what works for a particular kid and designing lessons that can really help them succeed.
In addition to helping kids learn and grow, I also love animals. I have two adorable cats, and soon I'm planning to start fostering dogs as well!
