Assignments
I will provide feedback on how well student understand the projects in this class. I can provide a formal rubric and feedback upon request.
Progress Report
This class is not especially formal. It is geared around growing creativity and wonder, which are key characteristics of strong learners, but it isn't necessarily intended to be a comprehensive scientific curriculum. That said, I would be happy to provide information about your child's learning and progress in the course if you would like!

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
This class is based upon a fantastic book called Fairy Tale Science. In this class, we will explore the first half of the book. We will learn about fairy tales from around the world and discuss the fairy tales' origins and cultural importance in an age-appropriate way. Then, we'll dig into the science behind the magic! We'll connect fairy tales to physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering! Students will practice the scientific method by reading background information from the book, creating hypotheses, experimenting, and reporting their results.
Learning Goals
In this course, students will develop their natural curiosity by learning to ask questions about the science behind traditional tales.
Students will learn to employ the scientific method in order to investigate the questions they ask.

Lesson 1:
Introduction
In this class, we will get to know each other. We will also get to know the book! We'll read the introduction, go over safety expectations, and learn about the common parts, or tropes, of fairy tales.

Lesson 2:
One Bad Apple part 1
In this lesson, we will read the fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Then, we will talk about vital signs and how doctors can tell about a person's health by observing them.

Lesson 3:
One Bad Apple part 2
In this lesson, we'll talk about the mammalian diving reflex, a reflex that mammals, including humans, have that helps them survive the cold. We'll do a short experiment to test our own mammalian diving reflexes. Since Snow White was poisoned by an apple, we'll also discuss some real life poisons!
30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Blowback part 1
In this lesson, we will read The Three Little Pigs. We'll talk about the physics of air pressure and conduct a simple experiment that will allow students to see it in motion!

Other Details

Learning Needs
This class is not designed to meet unique learning needs, but most of my classes are. If your child has specific needs, please reach out! I will work with you to make sure your child has the best experience possible.
Parental Guidance
Students should ALWAYS be safe when doing science. The experiments in this course are intended for young children, so they are generally quite safe. Even so, we will review safety expectations at the beginning of class, and I will expect students to adhere to them. I've included a list of materials that could conceivably present danger if not used correctly. As you can see, common sense should allow for safe use: ice, a blow dryer, a glass, toothpaste, contact solution, magnets, baking soda, vinegar, scissors, and warm (not hot) water. Students should certainly use basic common sense and follow safety rules, but there is no substantial danger from any of the materials in these lessons.
Supply List
Students will need a copy of the book Fairy Tale Science by Sarah Albee. Students will also need a notebook. If you've taken one of my other science classes, please feel free to use your notebook from another class.

Other materials you might not have include a ping-pong ball, modeling clay, craft sticks, and carnations (you'll want to get these right before the appropriate lesson. I'll let you know!)
