1 hour per week. This is a project based class and some participants may need to complete their project outside of the conversation time. How-to guides with a step-by-step process will be provided for extension activities beyond the class. The how-to guide is in the course welcome email distributed upon sign-up.Assessment
Learners will receive a skills checklist for self-evaluation of mastery of the expected class outcomes. The checklist is in the course welcome email and is distributed upon sign-up.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 9
Intermediate Level
Essential Questions: 1. What are the must know vocabulary and definitions and application? 2) How is the language of chemistry used to describe three dimensions? 3) What are the must know rules and how do we follow them? Are there rules we can break? What the learner will do: 1. Develop and write your defining scientific thought processes. 2. Draw out solutions to complex problems. 3. Create a model that represents your thinking and be able to visualize the processess. 4. Analyze the potential outcomes for prioritization and realistic production. 5. Connect learning outcomes to more conversations in chemistry. By the end of this class learners will be able to: 1. Create a molecule through a chosen method (drawing, model) 2. Discuss carbon, its affinity, placement, and orientation 3. Define real world examples of carbon and carbon-based molecules that make up life Class structure: 1. Opening and defining class content and questions 2. Walk though of materials and organization 3. Activity of either drawing or modeling and defining the concepts 4. Discussing related concepts 5. Sharing of ideas and final model project This class is highly interactive and requires manipulation of multiple materials such as a notebook and writing object, small parts to the model frame (if chosen), and hand eye and color coordination. The teacher will model and ask learners to identify. Learners can remain on mute and participate in the conversation through observation, speaking the words on mute, chatting, or sharing out loud with the rest of the class. The presentation style is conversational and ideas and feedback will be shared in the moment to support guided learning and the possibilities available and relevant to the subject.
Learning Goals
Talk like a scientist and use the language of chemistry.
Be able to identify functional groups and their impact on molecular properties.

Dr. Michael Blanchard completed his PhD at the University of Tennessee. He spent his time discussing the use of Lewis acids, Ziegler-Natta catalysis, and working to scale processes for efficiency. Before his PHD, Dr. Mike studied forensic sciences. There, his passion for the interdisciplinary work of chemistry began. From cooking to building to living in the world around us, Dr. Mike's passion is sharing how we are all connected to the study of chemistry. It was the development of the specific fields of chemistry that awarded him Adjunct Professor at Warren National University. He quickly discovered that his passion for sharing and connecting knowledge was the point which learners' owned a solid conceptual foundation and were at the crossroads of deeper diving topics, such as organic chemistry and beyond.
