Live Group Course
The Youth Drum Pad Program builds rhythm reading and performance for ages 6-9 through a combination of guided instruction, practice, and creative exploration. Participants will develop their musical skills, coordination, and rhythm.

Homework
1 hour per week. Practicing is a way to internalize and test your skills. Supplemental activities for the learner to engage with will be offered to support growth and development. Participants are encouraged to create a video of the practice performances and share with the learning leader. Learners will receive a response in return.
Projects
Learners will have the opportunity to share their performances on the drum pad, write their own drum patterns, and participate in a capstone performance sharing their unique talents.
Assessment
At week 7, learners will complete a confidence report on their progress towards mastery of the specific skills this class is intended to develop.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Beginner Level
This class is an authentic learning environment where we are learning to transfer rhythm activities to an instrument and begin to play like the professionals do. 

What you will learn:
     1. Read 6 different programs of varied music patterns as a set of instructions through standard notation for percussion for quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and quarter and eighth rests. 
     2. Learn a basic stick grip and how to sit or stand to play the drum.
     3. Actively listen and gather information for drum and rhythm performance.
     4. Apply showmanship and entertaining rhythmic performances.

Class features:
     Drumming Olympics - a competitive drum game period where learners have the opportunity to show off their skills and compete to win the gold!
     Develop a personal drumming performance with varied rhythms and choreography.
     Complete a learner confidence report - a checklist of skills and the learner's goals and response to learning and activities. This profile can be used to help decide which class is best to enroll in once 101 is completed.
     Virtual Class Recital - to be held on the last day complete with a program
     Immediate and Out of Class teacher feedback and support through video conversation.

The role of the teacher will be to guide through active listening and responding to student technique and performance. Delivery of instruction will use a variety of techniques from call and response, mimic and rote learning, reading music, and improvisation.

The development of basic music milestones to create, perform, respond, and connect with music through the performance of a variety of rhythm patterns that are technically and expressively engaging. We will discuss mental rehearsal techniques as a practice method when we are away from the drum. 

Learners are encouraged to play their snare drum or drum pad to expand their current skills and discover how rhythm and drumming applies in the real-world as part of a group. Learners are further encouraged to come to the sessions to try something new, ask questions, give feedback, and share their musical interests. We will all learn and grow together.

This class is developed against the National Standards for Music Education:
MU: Cr1.2b: generate musical patterns and ideas on the drum pad.

MU: Cr1.2b:  the rudiments used for drums in a variety of musical situations.

MU:Pr4.2.2a, MU:Pr4.2.2b: apply their knowledge of reading standard percussion notation and what the role of the drum is in an ensemble or for an audience to create sounds, beats, patterns, an calls

Generate musical patterns and ideas on the drum pad developing a deep understanding of the rudiments used for drums in a variety of musical situations.

Lesson 1:
It all starts here!
 Develop the necessary drum grip, begin your choreography, and play the first patterns that allow you to create exciting performances. No performance is too small - and we all started right here.

Lesson 2:
Choreography and Showmanship
 Deliver your first performance with stick choreography. These patterns will serve as the foundations of your development as you progress through the class sequence, focusing on right versus left and the variations available. Stick choreography includes the first steps of stick tricks that we will develop over time, which you can explore for personal development. Explore how to make our patterns more interesting by using rests as ghost notes and incorproating effective stick tricks.

Lesson 3:
Eighth note edition
 Vary your patterns fast and slow with the incorporation of eighth notes. Learn how drumming rhythms reflect the patterns of words.

Lesson 4:
Eighth Quarter and Showmanship
 Put all your earned skills together and create an entertaining performance. A new pattern set, this one is great to study and extend your creativity.
