Wake Your Brain in Your Chair: Enhance Your Learning With Science-Based Movement
What's included
1 live meeting
20 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Wake Your Brain uses movement to energize and empower students, decrease stress levels, and improve coordination of the nervous system for optimal learning, focus, and integration. All the neuro-exercises can be performed in a chair or wheelchair with limited mobility. This course was designed for bigger kiddos who need a quick brain break, but can't find something suitable on YouTube. This course used no music and no dancing, but used science-based, seated exercises to Wake Your Brain during on-line learning! We will get our blood flowing to wake up our bodies and brains with basic stretches. We will use cross-body movements to activate both sides of our brain. We will practice eye exercises to improve coordination and creative thinking. We will attempt fine motor coordination exercises to improve coordination in handwriting. We will learn breathing techniques to deepen our body awareness and connect to our mindfulness. We will close with words of positive affirmation and visualization. This class can be used to prepare for learning, take a break between learning, or get your wiggles out and refocus. As a physical therapist and dance educator, Ms Annika will lead the movements in the chair pushed back from a desk. These movements use neuroscience to coordinate the hemispheres of the brain, increase blood flow, and improve concentration especially during on-line learning. This will be a fun, high-energy class! This is an on-going class. While you may come and go as you please, our themes will keep rotating to practice the techniques in new and exciting ways every month! The more you practice, the better you Wake Your Brain! Week 1--Focus Week 2--Flexibility of Thought Week 3--Emotional Regulation Week 4--Organization and Patterning Week 5 (if there are 5 weeks in the month)--Practicing and Pause
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic, chair-based exercises they can use when their brain is feeling "foggy" to wake up and keep learning effectively and efficiently.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Learners will need to be able to push their chair away from the desk safely and balance on the edge of the chair without it tipping. Please check your chair before registering and get a stable, sturdy chair for this class. We don't want anyone falling out of the chair!
If you are hoping for a class that gets students up and moving, try a regular Wake-Your Brain class. Those classes are set to music move around the space.
Regardless of standing or sitting, these techniques are appropriate for all ages of learners. These techniques work for grown-ups, too!!
Supply List
You just need a little bit of space and an open mind to try new things. If your mobility is more limited, you may need a helper to get your blood pumping and your brain communicating! We'll work together to maximize your workout!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Ms Annika is a physical therapist who specializes in adapting movement patterns to individual students' needs. With more and more on-line learning being utilized in education today, students can easily get distracted and overloaded, minimizing the actual learning happening in front of a screen. This program uses neurologic principles in movement science to enhance learning-- especially digital learning.
