In this self-paced course, I will first teach a brief explanation of self-portraits in art history by looking at self-portraits of Rembrandt, Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and discussing how self-portraits look today with selfies and customized merchandise. I will then teach the student step by step how to draw a cartoon avatar/ self-portrait by demonstrating simple basic techniques they will copy as they follow along. Both the art history and techniques will be taught via an instructional video along with an accompanying step-by-step guide and provided examples.

Parental Guidance
A photo featuring avatars from Subway Surfers will be displayed as well as portraits of Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, and Rembrandt. The self-portraits of Van Gogh, Kahlo, and Rembrandt are age appropriate.
Supply List
Students will need white paper, a pencil with an eraser, and the coloring tools of their choice. I recommend having a black pen or marker as well for outlining.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
