Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
In this 18-week self-paced course, students will complete 6 drawing units, learning how to manipulate graphite pencils, colored pencils, ink, and markers while creating portraiture, animal drawings, linear perspective, still life illustration, cartooning, and collaged designs. One unit will post every 3 weeks.

This 18-week self-paced course does not require any previous art knowledge/ classes as it is an introductory drawing course with six major units. It is designed mostly for beginning high school artists and for homeschool students seeking an art credit. Each unit will include the project objectives, requirements, and resources which include instructional step-by-step videos, pictures of project examples, and suggested grading rubric.

Students will learn each new drawing medium and major subject matter through various sketch assignments first. (Step-by-step videos and photos of sketch examples will be given). After the sketch assignments have been completed and students are familiar with each medium and subject matter, students will create a final illustration using both the learned media and subject matter. Step-by-step instructional videos and PDFs will be provided as well as photos of finished examples and a suggested timeline for completion.

After completing each drawing, students will post photos of their final illustrations with comments on their favorite part of the project, the most challenging portion, and one thing they like about a provided example.

Sketches will be given completion grades. The final illustration will then be graded with a provided rubric and given both a percentage and letter grade. The final comments will also be given completion points. Feedback and grades will be given within two school days of sketches and projects being submitted. The overall class will also be given a letter and percentage grade upon completion.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to manipulate graphite pencils, colored pencils, ink pens, and markers. Students will learn how to illustrate facial and clothed figure portraiture, still life objects, photos, and animals using those media. Students will also be

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Students will be learning about the history of superhero comics for the cartooning unit which does mention the Great Depression and World War 2 as catalysts for graphic novels. The bronze age of comic books will also be mentioned when comic books did take on darker tones and did tackle social issues like the war on drugs and racism. The modern age of comics along with anti heroes will also be discussed. Students will be given past examples from previous drawing students who have given permission for their art to be displayed. Because student art is personal to each student, some students have art that features movie, game, and comic characters and may contain religious icons of that student. For the human figure unit, not nudity will be displayed at all. The figure will be taught fully clothed.
