Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
This class is a creative adventure in exploring both the games we love and what we love about them.
We will create our own path based board game that uses dice, a spinner, tokens and/or cards.

Our goal is to create a simple board game that we can play with our family and friends.

If you would like to share your final product as a short video of the game play with some pictures and maybe even your rules typed up, that would be fabulous. Remember, everything we create in here is the property of the creator so if we are inspired by what we see, acknowledge what you borrow idea wise and keep your work original.

This class is available as a 1:1 for a more focused approach, often subscribed to for learners with board games already being designed needing more directive support. Please contact us if you would like to find out more. https://outschool.com/classes/11-build-your-own-board-game-ygzZeJuT?usid=ww4VN1Zv&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link

Lesson 1:
Board Game Breakdown
Let's talk about all the different kinds of board games that we play. We will look at some examples and talk about themes for our game design. The assignment this week is to play as many path based board games that we can to figure out what we like about them. Get thinking about your theme and style of game you want to create! It's play and brainstorm week. Keep a list!

Lesson 2:
Theme/Mechanism
This week we get our theme decided on and talk about what elements we might use to create a basic board game. The assignment this week will be to decide on our theme, decide on spinner, dice or card movement and talk about complexity that we can add to the game to avoid runaway leaders. You will have the week to start working on the design of your board. You will need markers, paper, cereal boxes (cardboard) you can open up to glue your path onto and a glue stick.

Lesson 3:
Prototypes/Design ideas/Playtesting
This week we should have a prototype. If you are still working on your game, that's great! We can share what we've designed and we can talk about what works and so far what isn't working. Let's brainstorm solutions together! During the week I will post a playtest template. Use this to get feedback from the players of your game and we can talk about how to use this data to fine tune what you created.

Lesson 4:
Demonstration/Review/Feedback
Review your game, what did you discover? Let's talk over the good things and the problems we encountered. Let's review all of the terminology and ideas we learned!

🎲Instructor: Yvonne, B.Mus McGill University, is an interdisciplinary artist with a wide range of interests. "After a minor concentration in Art History, I continue to be fascinated by the subject and exploration into how we have changed art over the centuries. This includes fashion and board games! I like to upcycle old clothing, create collage and assemblage sculpture, create electronic music and I work a lot with recycled materials and papercrafts. My current obsession is roll and write board games and creating my own. As a homeschooling mom of an ND learner, I've developed project based learning opportunities that combine curricular expectations with specific interests. With a background in hardware repair working for IBM, working as a technical writer creating manuals, and as an artist in my own right, I have a mix of professional experience that I bring to my teaching. I am of Metis and European heritage and enjoy exploring history and current art trends in my culture as well. Learner Led project based learning is where we connect with learners and inspire them to continue in their learning journey."
