Let's use building bricks to make pictures and learn how to plot points along the way! In this one-time class, learners will be taught strategies for remembering how to plot a point, then they will read (x, y) coordinate pairs and use bricks to plot points in the first quadrant of a coordinate grid. After learners have had an opportunity to practice plotting points, they will then use their bricks to create a picture by using a color-by-number type of activity. Learners will then be asked to create directions for others to use to build a picture. Learners should be prepared for class with unit building bricks in different colors (see materials list) and a platform/baseplate, along with a pencil and paper. Bricks needed: 4 - 1x4s - black or grey recommended 5 - unit bricks (1x1) - black or grey recommended 8 unit bricks in each of 5 colors (I will be using red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and brown - your learner can substitute colors if needed) platform/baseplate at least 12 x12 If you need to buy bricks, this set available through Amazon has what you need for this class (and many more). https://www.amazon.com/CHAIN-PEAK-Building-1000Pcs-Compatible/dp/B087C5RHWX/?_encoding=UTF8&pf_rd_p=ec37b0dc-1f97-4a4c-ab17-9ba1098ed36d&pd_rd_wg=YLr8g&pf_rd_r=YGFFEJSRVNK15T17TKS9&pd_rd_w=hipmm&pd_rd_r=6848178d-424d-4921-9575-2800af3908cb&ref_=pd_gwm_ci_mcx_mr_hp_atf_m

Teacher expertise and credentials
Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.
Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.
When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
