Description
Class Experience
Week 1: Learners will discuss and explore various kinds of board games and think about how board games are really like a story. Learns will brainstorm ideas for the setting of their own game as well as the type of game play they might like to use. Week 2: Learners will talk about the writing process and create a plot outline to help them create rules and a board for their game. Week 3: During week 3 learners will share their rough drafts for their games. As part of this supportive show...
Learners will gain an apprication for different kinds of board games. Learners will understand the similarities in creating a board game and telling/writing a story. Learners will feel confident in using the writing process to express their own ideas.
Mrs. Fimbel has been teaching in Public schools for 10 years and has taught a version of this game design class to students in 3rd-5th grade at her brick and mortar school as part of an enrichment class several times. Recently she presented this project at the Texas Computer Teachers Association convention. Mrs. Fimbel is skilled at fostering a community in class as well as guiding discussions in a positive manner.
Each week in class we will discuss the next steps in game design. Depending on the size of the class and complexity of the games a significant amount of work may need to be done outside of class. Learners who are very involved may finish this course with a rough draft of a game, while learners who do not have as much time may just gain an apprication for the process.
Learners will need a note book or space for online files for keeping track of their work and ideas. Some students may want colored pencils, markers, and other art supplies to draft their gameboard and pieces. Some handouts will be provided and will need to be printed or edited online.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Mrs. Fimbel will informally assess students each week to see that they are understanding the connections between writing process and game design. Mrs. Fimbel will also offer feedback on game ideas, rules, and rough drafts. A formal transcript entry and grade are available upon request. However, the request must be made before the end of the first class meeting.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Please be aware that this is a project based learning class and students will be brainstorming their own ideas for their personal game projects. Anytime students have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas, suggestions may be presented which may be different than ideas or beliefs your learner may have encountered before. Please take some time to discuss with your learner what to do if ideas are shared that make them uncomfortable. Mrs. Fimbel believes in encouraging students to follow their interests and supports students who want to be self expressive in an appropriate manner.
