Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
There are so many playful ways for children to use their emerging reading and writing skills. In this one-time class, the focus is board games. We will talk about board games that learners play at home. Then, we take a close-up look at a few examples, to see how board games include pictures, words, numbers, and symbols. We will brainstorm game ideas and then get started on creating our own unique game boards. The goal is not to complete a finished product by the end of the class, but for children to get started on this process together, and to ignite an interest in creating their own games to play at home. When children naturally bring their literacy development into their play, they can grow into more confident readers and writers over time.

Note about Materials:
Please bring a few sheets of paper and something to draw/write with (any of the following: pencils, crayons, markers).
Upon enrolling in the class, you will receive an optional game board template that can be printed out. Learners are welcome to either use the template or blank sheets of paper to design their game boards. It is NOT necessary to print anything out to participate in class.

This class is designed for children with a range of literacy skills. The way each child engages with the activities in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing letters, words, and/or sentences). If your child is slightly outside of the age range, but you believe they would benefit from this class, feel free to reach out to me to see if it is a match. I strive to provide an inclusive learning environment and celebrate all levels of literacy development.

Learning Goals

The overarching goal of this class is to spark children's excitement for using their current literacy skills in playful and meaningful ways both in class and afterward at home. I believe that learning to read and write is a process that develops gradually with support, time, and authentic opportunities to use their developing skills. The way each child engages with the activities in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing letters, words and/or sentences). The class is designed to support the child in their current stage of development and to inspire them to use their current skills in new ways.
