Class Experience

This course is designed for students in K-2 who need to practice identifying the sounds letters make and/or blending. It is the first of a three-part reading course for beginners. Classes will begin with introductions and a short welcome time and will end with a review and closing time. The first four lessons will follow a format of teaching a few letters, doing an activity, teaching the rest of the lesson’s letters, and doing another activity. Special attention will be paid to accuracy of the letter’s sound pronunciation, including the movement of the mouth and tongue. Flashcards and anchor charts will be used. Students will be asked to match pictures to the correct beginning sound and will, occasionally, be asked to find items in their home that start with the target sound. In the fifth and sixth lessons, special emphasis will be placed on vowel sounds. No digraphs or diphthongs are included in this course, only short and long vowel sounds (specifically, the silent ‘e’ rule). We will work will beginning vowel sounds and middle vowel sounds. In the last two lessons, the emphasis will be on blending sounds together.

Week one: letter-sounds A-M
 Lesson one: /b/, /d/, /f/, /h/, /l/
 Lesson two: /c/, /k/, /g/, /j/, /m/

Week two: letter-sounds N-Z
 Lesson three: /n/, /r/, /s/, /v/, /x/, /z/
 Lesson four: /p/, /q/, /t/, /w/, /y/

Week three: short and long vowels
 Lesson five: short vowels
 Lesson six: long vowels

Week four: blending
Lesson seven: practice blending two and three sounds (short vowels)
Lesson eight: practice blending three sounds (long vowels)

Learning Goals

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
-identify most letter sounds
-match target pictures to their beginning letter sounds
-demonstrate an understanding of the reading skill “blending”
