This course is designed for students in K-2 who need to practice identifying the sounds letters make and/or blending. It is the first of a three-part reading course for beginners. Classes will begin with introductions and a short welcome time and will end with a review and closing time. The first four lessons will follow a format of teaching a few letters, doing an activity, teaching the rest of the lesson’s letters, and doing another activity. Special attention will be paid to accuracy of...
By the end of the course, the student will be able to: -identify most letter sounds -match target pictures to their beginning letter sounds -demonstrate an understanding of the reading skill “blending”
I taught kindergarten for fourteen years, in a mix of private and public schools, with small and large class sizes. My favorite subject to teach has always been reading. I love teaching the essential skill of reading because it is so important to success in school and in life. I strive to imbue students with a life-long love of reading.
Possibly some extra work to reinforce what was learned in class, depending on skill level of student and his/her ability to perform tasks in class.
Parents, please check the online classroom before each lesson to see the list of supplies needed. Supplies will be things found around the home or worksheets to print out to be used in class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be observed by the teacher for participation, demonstrating an understanding of the concepts taught, and the ability to stay focused on the task. The teacher will informally check and record each student’s ability to recall the letter sounds, match pictures to beginning sounds, and blend sounds together.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Please make sure your child has a quiet place to take class. This is essential for me to be able to check pronunciation. Please check the online classroom before each lesson to see if there are additional recommendations or supplies needed.
