Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
During this class, we will focus on one vowel per class. I will introduce students to the concept of a closed syllable. Students encounter these words in controlled readers (like BOB books and other decodable texts). In this class students will learn the components of a closed syllable, how to identify one, and how to read one. The class will begin with a virtual greetings and phonics warm up to review key sounds. Students will review the concepts of vowels, consonants, and syllables. I will teach the students what a closed syllable is, and we will work together to identify them in isolation and in short sentences. Finally, the students will practice strategies for coding and reading words with closed syllables. I try to use as many multi-sensory activities as possible, even when virtual. I encourage class participation and engagement. This class will allow students ample time to interact with me and the other students to show what they learned in the class. Students should know the alphabet and most sounds each letter make prior to this class. Students do not need to participate in all sessions and can join for any sessions that fit their schedule. Each week we will focus on a different letter to practice and reinforce the above mentioned skills to achieve mastery. Once a student has mastered this skillset, it will be recommended that the student moves on to the next course.

Hi, I specialize in teaching reading. It is my passion to introduce students to books and develop a love for reading in kids of all ages. I have a masters degree in education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a special education certificate in special education from Brooklyn College in New York City. I have worked as a peer tutor, as a test prep tutor, and as an Orton-Gillingham tutor, helping students overcome various reading difficulties to achieve their goals. I also worked as a reading teacher and a special education teacher at a title 1 charter school in NYC. I believe that every child has the potential to become an avid reader, we just have to ignite their passion and build their skills in an individualized way. I recently moved from NYC to live near the ocean. My hobbies include going to the beach, traveling, playing tennis, and or course READING!
