Class Experience

In this dance class, students will be challenged in their Ballet and Pointe technique in a fun, interactive, and educational environment through online learning. Together we will cover classical movement and methodology, and French terminology, with a focus on beginning pointe combinations for strength and placement.

At the beginning of each class we will start with a slow warm up for our feet and breaking in our shoes. Most of our time together will be spent focusing on barre work, including plie, tendu, releves, echape, passe, coupe, and balances. This will be built on each week as the student gets stronger. Once the student has accomplished these steps, we will move on to center work. In the center, the student will practice balance and placement while performing a classic adagio, strength for rolling through the feet on pointe, and the following combinations: tendu with echape, passé preparation for pirouette, and small jumps. To end class we will take some time to discuss what we learned.

This class is intended as a fun challenge for beginning pointe students and learners will follow along with the instructor at a slow to moderate pace. Some previous experience is is required, at least 2-3 years of classical Ballet and an approval for beginning pointe work. Any questions or comments will be answered during class time.

Learning Goals

Students will learn safe and strength building combinations for beginning pointe work, as well as increasing knowledge of proper technique and placement.

Please contact me in advance if you have any health or safety concerns for your learner.* In this class we will move at a slow to moderate pace together, monitoring our physical activity safely. *For pointe work it is advised to have your primary physician’s approval before beginning classes, to ensure proper glute, leg, and foot strength, as well as ankle mobility. If your learner has not been approved for pointe yet, this class can be taken in flat shoes as a pre-pointe class. I am also available upon request to assess a student being ready for pointe.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!

My name is Ms. Emily and I live in the Chicago area dancing, performing, and teaching ballet professionally. I began teaching a variety of dance classes for youth ages 3-22 over twelve years ago. From Pre-Ballet to Pre-Professional, I’ve taught it all, enjoying every step of the way. Im so grateful to Outschool for giving me the opportunity to connect with students globally and make a difference in every virtual meeting!

My teaching style is threefold: encouraging, imaginative, and productive. I love opening the floor for questions and to further help students understand the intention, mechanics, and history behind each step. Knowing the how’s and why’s is the key to becoming your own artist and building confidence and trust in your body. Dance is my passion and it is my hope and priority to provide a fun, mindful, and interactive learning experience for all learners and students of any age and level!

After graduating I was accepted by audition to a Chicago ballet company, where I have performed and toured the nation professionally since 2016 as a Solo Artist. During this time I have also directed a pre-professional program geared towards advancing the serious student, teaching a variety of classes nation-wide, choreographing, and coordinating performance opportunities in both community spaces and professional stages.

In addition to this I am professionally certified in Progressing Ballet Technique and have an extensive background in the study of beginning thru advanced ballet, pre-pointe, and pointe work, as well as experience in teaching modern, jazz, improv, and choreography. You name it, I teach it! I am dedicated to furthering my own knowledge daily to best help your student succeed.

Above all my desire is to offer high quality training in an accessible and modern-age environment. I also believe one-to-one mentoring in the arts is important and should be affordable and available to everyone. I’m dedicated to helping bring small and low-income communities professional training to the comfort and convenience of your own home. In addition to this, online classes can be a perfect supplement to your weekly training - Enjoy the benefits of multiple teachers and perspectives! My classes are short and sweet, designed to be supplemental to the training your student already receives. For a full list of classes offered, please reach out to me directly to get started. *I am happy to provide more information regarding financial aid, private class opportunities, and how to best supplement your in-person training with online classes.*

In my free time I like to explore the city of Chicago, travel the world, and spend time baking, cooking, and trying new recipes.
