Class experience
I welcome learners of all identities and backgrounds into my classes. Please have your guitar tuned before class, but I will help with fine tuning at the class. I will send a link for GuitarTuna that you can use online, or you can get the GuitarTuna app for your phone. This is a beginner course on playing the guitar. No prior experience is necessary. The first class will introduce the students to the guitar, the string numbers and names, and an overview about how to tune the guitar....
The students will be able to play some simple beginner songs. They will feel more confident about playing guitar and their ability to learn an instrument. The students will be able to read guitar tablature. Students will be able to read a chord diagram, and use proper fingerings for chords. The students will learn some beginner, basic chords, with correct fingering and basic strumming. The students will be able to hold the guitar properly and use correct left hand positioning. Students will be able to play an E minor pentatonic scale, and improvise a simple lead. The students will be prepared to move on to the second level guitar class.
I have 20+ years experience, as a music teacher. I have taught piano, electric keyboard, guitar, and general music classes, in both the classroom and private settings. I was head of the music department at a private high school in Maryland. I taught private piano and guitar lessons at a guitar shop, for 5 years, in addition to my own private students in my studio. I have a bachelor's degree in music education, from Towson University, plus graduate studies in music education.
Homework Offered
I will upload song sheets, tablature, and some videos of how to play the songs, into the classroom each week. You can print the materials out and keep them in a folder if you like. You can also view the materials in the classroom, and practice from there. Students will be given various things to practice each week, on their own, to be ready for the next week's lesson. I recommend that students practice at least 20 to 30 minutes, at least 3 different days, during the week, in order to become familiar with the material, and to develop their skills.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Each student's progress will be informally assessed during the lessons, and at the close of the course.Grades Offered
