I welcome learners of all identities and backgrounds into my classes. This class will be individualized to the unique student's level, musical interests and learning style. For total beginners, we will start with the basics of holding the guitar and how to play on the frets. The student can let me know...
The student will learn the parts of the guitar, and the string numbers. The student will be able to tune their guitar, using an electronic tuner or the GuitarTuna app, or online tuner. They will learn the frets and how the dots on the guitar can help them to find the fret that they want. They will hold the guitar correctly and be able to strum with a steady beat. Students will be able to play some songs, at their playing level. The student will learn how to read chord diagrams and play the basic acoustic guitar chords. They will be able to play power chords, with the root on the 6th string and the 5th string. They will be able to do some simple improvisation, using a five note scale. The student will have more confidence about playing music and learning guitar.
I have been an Outschool teacher since May 2020. I have 20+ years experience, as a music teacher and professional musician. I have taught piano, electric keyboard, guitar, and ukelele, in both the classroom and private settings. I was head of the music department at a private high school in Maryland. I taught private piano and guitar lessons at a guitar shop, for 5 years, in addition to my own private students in my studio. I have a bachelor's degree in music education, from Towson University, plus graduate studies in music education.
I recommend 20- 40 minutes of practice , about 3 to 5 times per week, if possible.
Informal assessment. Ongoing communication with student . Parents can feel free to message me any time about student's progress.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
I will send you a link for the GuitarTuna online guitar tuner. This is the tuner that I recommend. It is also available as a free app for your phone. There is no account needed for this tuner. I will sometimes play a song for the student, using youtube on the zoom screen share. This will be to let them hear how the song goes, so they can more easily learn the song.
