Art for Special Needs Children: Decorative Bottles and Jars

In this class, students will make decorative bottles and jars with just a few materials. These colorful containers make great gifts, beautiful flower vases, perfect paintbrush holders, and cool decorations for shelves.

Description

Class Experience

I am a former teacher, current homeschooling mom to a special needs child, and a visual artist. I have a Master of Education.

For mixed classrooms of special needs and typical learners, I developed and delivered instruction in art to support the learning of math concepts, scientific ideas, language arts, and social studies. Lessons were individualized and modified for special needs learners, as needed. Examples of individualized instruction/modifications include pairing verbal instructions with visual supports, providing large print directions, repeated verbal cueing, breaking down projects into smaller chunks, modifying requirements to emphasize quality over quantity, providing additional time to complete work, and delivering instruction in small group settings.

Now, in homeschooling my daughter, art plays a central role in supporting academics, developing fine motor skills and executive functioning, improving hand-eye coordination and bilateral integration, honing observational abilities, encouraging problem solving and decision-making, enhancing communication and self-expression, sharpening visual spatial reasoning, and increasing focus and concentration. All essential life skills.

A small sampling of my artwork can be found on IG @heart_and_hands_art.

Three clean, label-free, glass bottles and/or jars of varying sizes and shapes Colored tissue paper (at least five different colors) Elmer's liquid glue Paint brush - for applying glue Note: Small paintbrushes that come in paint kits will be too small to do the job efficiently. Bristles should be at least 1/4" across. Container - for glue Newspaper - to keep work space clean Scissors White paper Damp cloth - to wipe glue from hands as needed
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
An important consideration in determining if this class is right for your child: We will be using liquid glue. Glue will get on his/her hands. If your child has sensory sensitivities that make touching glue uncomfortable, but he/she still wants to participate in this class, one option would be to have him/her wear vinyl or latex gloves. Please be sure that the gloves fit well; that they allow for easy movement without being too loose and in the way.

As students will be working at their own pace, some students may finish a couple of bottles/jars before class is over, while others may still be working on their first bottle/jar when class ends. Students who are still working on their first piece at the end of class will have done most of the work during the class and will be able to complete their bottle/jar with what they have learned.
