Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This class is part of my Contemporary Artist Series, in which we learn about artists from the mid-20th century to today, analyze their art style and subject, and make a creation inspired by their art.

My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective. The examples in the picture are only suggestive; students may also request a particular favorite if time allows.

My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time!

At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is.

Background knowledge in art concepts and/or the artist is helpful but not necessary!

Syllabus

2 Lessons
over 1 Week
Lesson 1:
Background and Beginning
We will study who Heather Galler is, her contribution to art, and her art style, and begin drawing drawing a landscape with different elements (trees, buildings, landforms, etc.). We will trace the outlines of the shapes with a black Sharpie and add patterns with wax crayons. Optional Homework: Students can do a google image search of her art as well as look at her website and galleries that feature her art, to help them with ideas for their own art.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Putting it All Together
We will finish drawing, tracing and adding patterns, then paint the picture with watercolor paint, being careful to not use the same colors of paint as crayon, so that the patterns stand out.
