Class Experience

Scratching your head on a specific algebra concept? Need help learning how to factor trinomials? What about the Pythagorean theorem? How do I use the quadratic formula? What do I DO with all these Xs and Ys? Fear not! Help is just a question away! Bring your questions, your problems and your algebra headaches to the Algebra Study Room. Together, we can look at problems from a new angle and address your specific needs and questions. Many brains are better than one! This class uses Saxon Algebra 1 as the teaching text, although any algebra question, from any textbook is welcome. The class is student directed with questions and topics directed by the students to the teacher. Students are encouraged to e-mail the instructor with questions ahead of time and we will take turns looking at different concepts and problems. Class size will remain small in order for every student to have adequate time to ask and answer questions. The ongoing class structure will allow students to only sign up when they need additional support and help. If questions are few, or if we have covered all questions quickly, the remaining time will be spent on ACT math sample questions.

Learning Goals

Students will gain confidence in algebra skills such as factoring, ratios, exponents, solving for variables, simplifying equations, graphing, metric conversions, distance problems, and more.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Although a music teacher by profession, I am also a homeschool mom who has fresh Algebra 1 skills. Math has been a favorite subject of mine due to wonderful past teachers who could patiently explain and model problems. Going through two years of Algebra 1 with my struggling learner at home and watching him learn and grow in his skills into a confident math student has shown me what a little patience, a little diagramming, and a little "let's look at this again," can do for math confidence. I am a professional teacher with over 2 years experience teaching in an online classroom.
