Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
Kids LOVE learning multiplication. It's a "big kid" math skill that they can't wait to master. Many students learn basic multiplication facts without a solid understanding of what multiplication really means which can be a major stumbling block when learning division and multiplication of greater numbers. This class helps learners develop a deep understanding of what multiplication is and explores the different representations a multiplication expression can have. This deeper understanding makes it easier for children to apply the skill and solve real-world problems.
***If you are looking for quick mastery of facts through flashcard style repetition, this is not the class for you.***

To develop a solid conceptual foundation, learners will participate in hands-on activities using objects found around the house, play games to practice the skill, and engage in real-world problem solving. Learners will move from the concrete (hands-on/using manipulatives) learning stage to the representational stage (visual representation/drawing) to the abstract stage (writing equations).

The topic for each class is as follows:
-Class 1: Multiplication as Equal Groups
-Class 2: Multiplication as Repeated Addition and Skip-Counting
-Class 3: Multiplication Properties (Commutative Property, Identity Property, Zero Property)
-Class 4: Solving Word Problems with Multiplication

Materials needed for this class:
-paper and pencil
-100 identical small objects (dried pasta, mini marshmallows, pennies, paper clips, cotton balls, centimeter cubes, etc.)
-empty egg carton (dozen) or 12 cup muffin pan
-worksheets provided by the teacher to be printed for class

**Classkick and Blooket will be used in this course. No personal information or log-ins are necessary.**

I have several classes that are great follow ups to this class.
-Action Math Facts Club: Multiplication with Movement (ongoing class - students learn strategies for each multiplication table and practice with hands-on activities, movement, and games)
-Action Math: TRICKY Multiplication Facts with Movement (multi-day class - students learn strategies for the harder multiplication tables and practice with hands-on activities, movement, and games)
-Game On! (ongoing class - students practice basic multiplication facts with movement and games)

Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland has provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 4-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.
