US Grade 9 - 12
This course takes place during four 60-minute classes set to end just before the ACT exam dates for spring 2023. Did you know that the reading section of the ACT test is the best determiner of a student's overall score? For this reason, this course centers on the reading section of the ACT exam, but we also cover the other sections, as well as overall test-taking strategies. The class will consist of reading, discussion, practice questions and test sections designed to teach the skills tested on the ACT exam. Students will feel more comfortable and prepared with proper skills and practice for the test. First meeting: We will get to know each other, go over the basics of the ACT exam, and examine the best ways to study for each section. We will practice the reading section of the exam. Students will also receive lists of links suggested by ACT to further their studies and practice outside of class if they desire. Second meeting: We will review responses in the practice reading section from the first meeting, using them to determine what reading skills each student should focus on. This will also influence the learning objectives for the class. We will closely look at the type of readings students will have to engage with on the test, determine strengths, and create a plan for best attacking the reading section. Third meeting: We will focus on the other sections of the test: English, science, and math. Students will become familiar with, practice, and review the skills necessary for these sections. Fourth meeting: Students will practice different timing strategies to determine their best individualized strategy during the test. Students will receive tips and strategies from ACT on taking the test. This meeting will end with a lesson on the writing section, which is an optional portion of the exam.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their knowledge of and level of comfortability with the ACT exam. Students will improve their test-taking skills and many of the specific categories tested for college entry, with a focus on reading, which is the best predictor of overall score.
