Class Experience

SPECIAL NOTE: This is an accelerated, flex-schedule version of my "Introduction to Medical Science: Part 1" course. It is a great option for students who need to work at their own schedule. I will initiate discussion over the material throughout the week on the classroom message board.

This course is the first half of a year long course (see "Introduction to Medical Science: Part 2" description below), Introduction to Medical Science. I designed this course to give students, who may be interested in going in to the medical field, an overview of different things they will come across during their training and/or career.

-What will students learn?
The following subject matter will be covered:
-Medical Insurance & History of Medicine
          - Professionalism in the Medical Field & Medical Ethics
          - Directional Terms, and Time & Math in Medicine
          - Medical Terminology
          - Scientific Research

*Learning Goals will be given each week, so students know exactly what they should be learning from the material. All tests are created directly from these learning goals!

**Throughout the notes, discussion, and assignments, different careers related to what we are studying will be mentioned and sometimes looked in to. This is to help students connect what they are learning to how it is used in the "real world", as well as make them aware of different career options they may be interested in.

I will be posting materials (Power Point notes, worksheets, online references, study guides, quizzes, tests, etc.) to the classroom twice each week(Mondays & Thursdays). Students will be responsible for learning material at their own pace and keeping up with the flow of the course. Discussion will be facilitated each week on the discussion board.

Basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. It is helpful for students to have science background such as Biology, Physical Science, etc., however it is not necessarily required.

Various assignments will be given each week in order for students to practice what they are learning and dig deeper in to the content. Assignments may include worksheets, webquests, videos, projects, research, quizzes, tests, and papers.

I am happy to grade all of the student work that is turned back in to me. This includes worksheets, projects, papers, quizzes, and tests. I will assign due dates to the work given and as long as it is returned to me by the due date, I will grade/give feedback within one week. Work turned in late will be graded at my convenience! For the first 3 units listed above there will be a summative test at the end of each unit. During the medical terminology unit, a quiz will be given each week over the material presented that week before moving on to more medical terms. There will be no summative test. For the Scientific Research unit, we will take a step by step approach to picking out a research question, writing a rough draft, and then a final copy of a 2-page research paper.

Introduction to Medical Science: Part 2, another semester long course, can be completed after this course. It will cover the systems of the body, looking at the anatomy & physiology, and diseases/disorders. Again, careers pertaining to each weeks material will be discussed and sometimes looked in to.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi parents and students! My name is Mrs. Fruchey and I have a love of Life Science! Life Sciences include subjects like Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Sciences, Zoology, and more!

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in 7-12 Grade Life Science Education and two years of experience teaching High School Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Forensic Science. My second year of teaching I designed and taught a class called "Introduction to Medical Sciences" for students thinking about entering the medical field.

I now stay home with my two little boys who aren't quite old enough to learn about all of this fun stuff! I would love to share my passion and knowledge of this material with you and your students!
