Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner Level
Welcome to another popular class on Java, in the form of a weeklong camp. It teaches the basics in two parts.

Who should attend:
* Learners in 6th/7th/8th grade who want to delve into coding for the first time.
* Learners in high school who want to learn Java so they can do advanced courses in high school such as AP Computer Science A
* Learners in 5th grade are somewhat young for this class but they can consider it, if they are already quite familiar with coding or if they are passionate about coding.
___________________________

This class gives an introduction to Java. Java is a great programming language for teenagers to learn. In this class, we will start with language syntax, variables, reserved words, operations on various data types. We will then teach if conditions, for and while loops to do basic algorithms. We will then learn how to think in an object oriented way and create classes.
Learners will be challenged to design a problem of their liking and discuss which classes and methods would be involved.

Topics covered:

Part 1:

Day 1: Basics of Java language, using variables
Day 2: Strings and basic operations on Strings
Day 3: Advanced String operations
Day 4: Methods, arguments and return types
Day 5: Loops - using for and while loops to solve problems

Part 2: (not part of these sessions)
Day 1: Introduction to Arrays
Day 2: Booleans and arrays
Day 3: Classes, objects and constructors
Day 4: Class relationships - hasA relationship
Day 5: Class Inheritance - isA relationship

What to expect:
------------------
In each class we will start with learning something new and then do a small exercise to make the concept really sink in.
We will learn concepts using a mix of code as well as slides. These will be available to learners during the class and later also. We will also go through questions together during the class and everyone is encouraged to participate.

***I care deeply that learners are actually learning and following along. We use multiple techniques to get the concept across. It could be a quizzes, additional examples, more discussion, etc. We will always be a small group to help true learning to take place. ***

Tools needed: (only a is browser needed)
------------------
Learners will use an online programming site called onecompiler.com to type and test their code. This helps us focus on the class material and not the IDE. It is highly recommended they make an account on this website so their code is automatically saved for them.

If learners already have a Java IDE(IntelliJ or Eclipse) installed and can get help using it, they may use that instead too. IDE is totally optional. The class will only use onecompiler.com throughout.

What if you cannot attend every session:
------------------
If learners misses a class. they should watch the recording and do the examples taught before their next class. And they can also do the homework for practice.

Homework:
------------------
Homework is also given after each class. It is optional but highly recommended. It takes between 30 to 40 minutes.

Learning Goals

Variables such as integers, decimals, booleans, chars and Strings
String operations such as indexOf, length, substring, etc

External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
We will code on a third party website called onecompiler.com. This website does not require a login. Learners will need to type their code in the left hand side and click a button to Run their program. The program will run on their server and show the results on the right hand side.
