A Compass, Ruler, & Protractor: All You Need for Geometry Part 2- Cohort Beta

Completed by 6 learners
Ages 11-15
Live Group Class
This second section meets for six days over a two-week period and continues with Euclid's geometry while drawing and playing with the tools of a ruler, compass, and protractor. We'll discover math as we create drawings of geometric shapes.

Class Experience

Using the tools of the compass, ruler, and protractor, students will learn Euclid’s theorems that are the basis of geometry and apply drawing techniques for constructing many geometric figures, in both 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional representations.
The class is structured to meet twice a week for two weeks for a total of four days per session.
I teach students how they can create their own text of notes and examples by demonstrating the techniques of geometric drawing. Students are given an assignment that best suits their particular needs and interests so that they can practice and hone their newfound skills.
My teaching style is engaging, inviting, and, I like to think, fun!
A typical class will consist of:
5 minutes- Introductions & preparation of materials
15 minutes- Teacher demonstrates some aspect of geometric construction (e.g. drawing a perpendicular bisector)
20 minutes- Learners practice applying what they've learned and we share ideas and raise questions.
5 minutes- The teacher wraps up the discussion with a review (after admiring student handiwork!) and gives an assignment to spark interest in the next class.

Week 1:
1st Lesson- The teacher will give notes and demonstrate how to use our tools to prove more theorems of Euclid such as how congruent and supplementary angles are formed when we intersect lines with parallel lines.
2nd Lesson- We’ll apply what we’ve learned about parallel and intersecting lines to the art of perspective drawing and to understanding this aspect of observing nature.
3rd Lesson- Usually at the end of the week, the teacher likes to review the week's previous lessons, give a little quiz, and pose some challenges so the students can gain more confidence and ponder future topics.
Week 2:
4th Lesson- The teacher will demonstrate more ideas of how we take geometry and apply it to finding patterns and making observations in nature. Students will be tasked with taking measurements of distant objects by indirect methods using similar triangles.
5th Lesson- We will wrap up our discussions so far on plane geometry and begin to explore the solid geometry of 3-dimensional shapes and how we can construct ellipses and represent spheres and cones in our drawings.
6th Lesson- We review and quiz ourselves on the previous lessons and share insights and more questions. Finally, students are invited to the next section of "Compass, Ruler, and Protractor: All You Need for Geometry, (Part 3)

Learning Goals

Students will continually improve their understanding of the theorems of Euclid and geometry as a basic science within mathematics. These next sections will dive into logic and the use of proofs. They will get practice and gain skills they can use for drawing in art or science and technology as well as applying the theorems to practical proofs in mathematics.

Parental Guidance
I can refer students to video clips (Youtube) that may interest your learners and we can comment upon them in subsequent class meetings. These are very helpful as a supplement to watching class recordings. No accounts are necessary for watching Youtube videos nor for watching Khan Academy videos on Youtube. (See sources, below)
Supply List
These are the same materials the students had with them when they started this course in Part 1. You will need a notebook with lined or graph paper, a pencil, an eraser, and compass, a ruler, and a protractor. These are available at any office/ school supply store for around $6.00.
Additional supplies will include typical classroom tools such as scissors, tape, glue, and paper.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught math and science from middle school, through high-school college-prep, and tutored at the college level. For the 15+ years, I've taught at charter and private schools in Arizona, geometry, and trigonometry were my favorite subjects to teach. It was probably because they also related to art and music and the observation of patterns in nature, which are pastimes and hobbies of mine!
