A Compass, Ruler, & Protractor: All You Need for Geometry Part 2- Cohort Beta

This second section meets for six days over a two-week period and continues with Euclid's geometry while drawing and playing with the tools of a ruler, compass, and protractor. We'll discover math as we create drawings of geometric shapes.

Class Experience

Students will continually improve their understanding of the theorems of Euclid and geometry as a basic science within mathematics. These next sections will dive into logic and the use of proofs. They will get practice and gain skills they can use for drawing in art or science and technology as well as applying the theorems to practical proofs in mathematics.
I have taught math and science from middle school, through high-school college-prep, and tutored at the college level. For the 15+ years, I've taught at charter and private schools in Arizona, geometry, and trigonometry were my favorite subjects to teach. It was probably because they also related to art and music and the observation of patterns in nature, which are pastimes and hobbies of mine!
Homework will consist of drawing, a short writing or note-taking assignment, and/ or a short video clip from Youtube.
The teacher will suggest fun video clips that demonstrate more applications of geometry using their tools as well as paper, scissors, and tape. Students can then share their work or discoveries in the following class!
Homework will take between 15 minutes to an hour to complete and will be evaluated on an individual basis.
These are the same materials the students had with them when they started this course in Part 1. You will need a notebook with lined or graph paper, a pencil, an eraser, and compass, a ruler, and a protractor. These are available at any office/ school supply store for around $6.00. Additional supplies will include typical classroom tools such as scissors, tape, glue, and paper.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Assessments are informal. I expect to spend an extra 20 minutes to half an hour conferring with each student via email. Students will be able to conduct their own honest self-evaluations in a supportive atmosphere.
2 hours 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
I can refer students to video clips (Youtube) that may interest your learners and we can comment upon them in subsequent class meetings. These are very helpful as a supplement to watching class recordings.
No accounts are necessary for watching Youtube videos nor for watching Khan Academy videos on Youtube.

These are optional but can aid in extending and reviewing the subject matter for your learner's enjoyment:

Video title: “Angles Formed by Parallel Lines and Transversals” by Khan Academy:
Video title: “How to Draw a Room in 1-Point Perspective”
