 Week 1
Lesson 1
Pose To Pose: Spin Dash and Uphill Roll With Sonic
Focusing on the basic principle of pose-to-pose, students will draw and animate Sonic curling into a spin dash and then rolling up a hill in 3 key frames and then emphasize the movement by having poses in between. Students will then code the motion in a loop and move Sonic across the screen at a speed matching his animation. A static background with a simple ramp will be added behind Sonic of which students will be using to integrate their animations with an environment in the next class.
Lesson 2
Arc: Flying Through the Sky With Tails
Using the principle of arcs as a building concept, students will continue from Sonic’s spin dash and extend the animation coming off the ramp and flying over a hovering Tails. Sonic in his spin dash ball form will come from the ramp in a U-shape arc over Tails with time in the air through several spaced out frames. Through this, students will understand how to implement the effect of arching motions. The static background from before will be moved up and down behind Sonic and Tails to add a gre
Lesson 3
Timing: Glide With Knuckles
By applying the principle of timing, students will further animate Sonic’s spin dash to include Knuckles flying through it, interrupting his glide and knocking him out in midair. Students will engage this principle by having Sonic and Knuckles move quickly towards impact, stop briefly upon collision, and then quickly fall down. Appropriate timing for this last part of the animation will assure that it is comedic and a great payoff for the amount of action from start to finish. The background wil
Through learning about the major principles of animation and applying them with their favorite characters, students will garner an appreciation for the nuances of animation like smooth movement and creative perspectives in drawing to make scenes look more engaging, as they do simple exercises to create original work through problem solving and practice.
