Class Experience

Use the common core to soar in second grade! In this ongoing class, learners will become knowledgable on the foundational skills for computational skills and reasoning abilities in math. There will be high engagement and participation and NO boredom! Your learner will look forward to class each week! This class will help your learner improve his/her mathematical reasoning skills, computational fluency, and number flexibility. Your learner will become successful during these hands on activities by both answering questions correctly and by making mistakes. Sometimes, we learn the most when we make a mistake! This is a safe environment where your learner is not expected to have the right answer all the time! The class size will be kept small in order to ensure every learner understands the material. Each class will be guided by the teacher, but students are also expected to write down and show their work in their own math notebooks or journals. Please see the supply list below for what would be best to have for your learner for the best experience in this class. The schedule is listed below. This is subject to change as needed based upon the progression of the learners' skills in class.

Learning Goals

Students will learn and master the standards in each unit as listed in the schedule.
I can recognize all numbers and their various forms.
I can use addition and subtraction within 100.
I can solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
I can fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
I can determine odd and even numbers.
I can understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones.
I can count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
I can read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
I can compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
I can add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
I can explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.
I can recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number
of equal faces.
I can identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
I can partition circles and rectangles into
two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths.
I can recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

Other Details

Supply List
Learners should bring paper, pencils, and erasers. It might work best to keep a "Math Notebook" for the learner to keep all of his/her work in. Learner may also use whiteboard and marker if desired. I will provide a tens frame and number bond worksheet prior to class for you to print (and possibly laminate or put it in a page protector for continued use).

If possible, please have a set of 20 counters for your learner to be able to use each class. This can be anything from coins, erasers, cheerios/cereal pieces, easter egg halves, lego bricks, small pieces of paper--anything that they can use to move around and count.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello parents! My name is Andrea Schmitz and I am SO excited to meet your learners. I work full time as a speech language pathologist (SLP) in an elementary school in FL. I have been working with children since high school but have been professionally working with children as a SLP for over 11 years now! I love helping children find their voice and learn new sounds, words and concepts. It brings me joy when they succeed at using BIG sentences to express their wants, thoughts, and needs! I earned my Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology from The George Washington University in 2007 and my Bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH (about 45 minutes from where I grew up).

In my classes, your learner will be having so much fun that they will not even realize they are learning! I focus on learning through play while having fun. I encourage a lot of engagement and participation between myself and the learners as well as learner to learner.

If you ever have any questions or ideas for future classes, do not hesitate to reach out to me. Be sure to follow me in order to stay up to date on my class listings and schedule. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with your learner and I cannot wait to meet you in class!
