In this writing workshop, we’re crafting a "Toasty Tale" using a wintery wonderland setting filled with the details that dazzle the heart of readers with the magical feeling of a fun-filled winter day. This narrative piece will be exciting to write because we’ll be writing from a third-person point of view. Not only will we be fleshing out the setting with details, but we’ll also be identifying the narrator's motives for retelling this story. Will they be telling a tale to brag about some major feat, will it be a tale of warning and caution, will it be a shared memory, or will it be a confession? The narrator's reasons for telling this story is unlimited. A great example of a third-person narrative can be found in “A Series of Unfortunate Events” By Lemony Snicket. By the end of workshop, we’ll have a unique full story outline and a few dozen sentences that will lure the reader into our "Toasty Tales". This workshop’s focus will be on using descriptive vocabulary. We’ll be crafting what I’ve coined as “spicy sentences” that will paint a picture or express the feelings that will keep any reader engaged with the story. Workshop activities: Narrator Profile Describe A Winter Setting Character Dialogue Why Your Child Should Take This Workshop: This one-hour writer’s workshop is a fantastic opportunity for your child to unleash their creativity and improve their writing skills in a fun and engaging way. By crafting a "Toasty Tale" students will learn to use descriptive vocabulary and explore a different narrative perspective, which is an essential skill for any budding writer. The fast-paced, interactive format ensures that even reluctant writers will find the process enjoyable and rewarding. Plus, by the end of the workshop, your child will have a complete story and a unique outline, boosting their confidence and enthusiasm for writing. The writer's workshop helps fulfill common core standards in writing, including: Text Types and Purposes: Students will write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. Production and Distribution of Writing: The workshop encourages planning and organizing ideas, which are essential skills for producing clear and coherent writing. Build and Present Knowledge: Students will recall information about their experience with snow and use it to enhance their stories, fostering memory skills and critical thinking. ∆ This workshop can be repeated at any time this winter to continue the story writing process. ∆
