Students will complete a break out room each week, requiring information from the week's instructional video. Completion of the break out room will demonstrate mastery of each week's content. In this class, students will learn about severe weather systems throughout four weeks, and participate in a series of activities to engage their learning, while also promoting interaction in the classroom. Each week, students will view an instructional video that will be posted on Monday of that week. Students will then participate in daily discussion board posts, responding to questions posed by the teacher, and have weekly activities to do. Every Friday, students will complete a digital break out room using information from the week's lessons, and are encouraged to support each other in the classroom to help solve the puzzle by providing hints of how they solved it. Each week, there will also be a Quizizz link provided for a quiz that will be available until Sunday of each week. Scores will be sent to both students and parents for keeping track for academic purposes. Each week, students will go through the following for their lesson: Week 1: Hurricanes/Cyclones/Typhoons -Video: students will watch the instructional video that will cover the categories of hurricanes, how they form, the naming system, the damage they cause, the difference between a watch and warning, as well as safety tips for these storms. Note Taker will be provided to be used with video. -Activity: Students will complete "What's my category?" worksheet where they will try to determine what category the storm is based off of several descriptions of the intensity of the storm. -Discussion Board: Students will answer daily questions in the classroom. Students will also be encouraged to help each other regarding the Break Out Room to help solve the problems. This can be done as a comment below the break out code link each week. Week 2: Tornadoes -Video: students will watch the instructional video that will cover the strengths of tornadoes, the categories, the severity of storms, the difference between a watch and warning, as well as safety tips for this type of storm. Note Taker will be provided to be used with video. -Activity: Students will complete " What can I do?" to determine how to stay safe in severe weather. -Discussion Board: Students will answer daily questions in the classroom. Students will also be encouraged to help each other regarding the Break Out Room to help solve the problems. This can be done as a comment below the break out code link each week. Week 3: Thunderstorms -Video: students will watch the instructional video that will cover how thunderstorms form, what they can accompany or what other weather they can create (flash floods, tornadoes, etc.),the difference between a watch and warning, and safety tips. Note Taker will be provided for students. -Activity: Students will read an article about severe storms and complete reading comprehension questions for the storms. -Discussion Board: Students will answer daily questions in the classroom. Students will also be encouraged to help each other regarding the Break Out Room to help solve the problems. This can be done as a comment below the break out code link each week. Week 4: Blizzards Vs. Droughts -Video: students will watch the instructional video that will cover the differences between a blizzard and a drought, as well as important features of each storm, including long term effects due to the severity of these different types of storms. Winter storms will be covered in this section as well. A brief discussion on the Dust Bowl will be discussed regarding a historical drought in the US and impacts on crops. Note Taker will be provided to be used with video. -Activity: Students will complete "Why did the Dust Blow?" Reading comprehension passage and answer questions reflecting on the Dust Bowl. -Discussion Board: Students will answer daily questions in the classroom. Students will also be encouraged to help each other regarding the Break Out Room to help solve the problems. This can be done as a comment below the break out code link each week. -Kahoot: Students will be provided a final review Kahoot to review concepts learned in class in preparation for the final quiz for mastery of concepts Links will be provided each week for the break out rooms and will be available for the week. In addition, Kahoot will be made available in the final week for review. Live sessions are available upon request if needed. There are no scheduled live meetings.

Students will learn facts and safety tips about different major storms including hurricanes/cyclones/typhoons (and why there are many names for the same type of storm), tornadoes, thunderstorms, blizzards, and droughts. Students will learn what causes each storm from weather, as well as the impact they have on people and homes.

In this class, severe storms will be discussed, including severe storm names and damage they may cause. Students will not be exposed to sensitive videos, but parents should be aware that storms such as Katrina, Hugo, and other major storms will be discussed, as well as tornadoes.Students will participate in virtual activities found on Kahoot , which also hosts other quizzes. These may be parental sensitive, but are not related to this course or teacher.
