Each learner will be given a 1:1 assessment at the end of the course to verify they are indeed reading at a D level (beginning 1st grade level). If they are not, we will continue to tutor them free of charge until they are. 1:1 assessments will be scheduled privately with the teacher upon completion of the course.

RESULTS BASED OR WE TUTOR FOR FREE!
I guarantee your child will be reading at a D level (beginner 1st grade) by the end of this course or I will tutor them for FREE until they are!

Let's get your learner "reading to learn" instead of "learning to read" before they even start school!

In this 5-week summer camp, learners will learn to read by using NearPod to practice ELA, beginner level reading, phonics, and spelling by doing word puzzles with an English tutor. Each lesson will focus on several consonants and one short vowel sound as well as 2-3 sight words (popcorn words as we will refer to them in the lesson because they "pop" up so frequently) and we will end the lesson with some actual sentences.

By the last day of camp, your learner will be reading at a D level according to Fountas and Pinnell's leveled reading guide, which equates to a beginner 1st grade level. This course is perfect for kiddos getting ready to start kindergarten or 1st grade. That way, when they actually start full school days, they're there reading to learn, and you don't have to worry about them falling behind!

Each class will begin by learning and reviewing the five vowels (a e i o u) and the short sounds they make.
Then we will focus on the specific letters being presented in that week's lesson, their sounds, and how to blend them all together to create CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and CVC nonsense words.

Research tells us that learning to read is not a natural process, but instead that written language is a code. Certain letter combinations represent certain sounds and young learners must decode the sounds and piece them all together to get an end result, which is what this class is about - creating and decoding that puzzle.

In my classes, I also teach something called "synthetic phonics". Synthetic phonics is when words are broken down to the smallest units of sound, called phonemes, then blended together to sound out the word correctly with no additional sounds or guessing. An example of using synthetic phonics versus traditional or analytic phonics, would be learning the letters /Mm/, /Nn/, or /Ll/. Traditionally, children (me) learned that the /Mm/ sound said, 'muh, muh, muh' and the /Ll/ sound said, 'la, la, la'. This makes decoding and blending words much more difficult because adding the 'uh' sounds at the end also adds an unnecessary vowel and sometimes extra syllable. If we taught beginning readers to sound out the word 'milk', for instance, it would be broken down as 'muh-i-la-kuh'. 'Muhilakuh' does not sound the same as 'milk'.

I take great care to teach each unit of sound correctly and the same every time we learn it. I explain and correct my students when they 'muh muh muh' and why it is incorrect. I teach that /Mm/ says 'mmmm'.

The lessons will use NearPod, which is an additional resource accessible from smartphones and tablets as well as browsers, which has interactive features and games for your learner to participate in. The NearPod link for that week's lesson will be available in the classroom announcements page within the hour prior to the class start time. NearPod is necessary for learners to participate!
**You do NOT have to create a NearPod account to join the lesson. The link or code from your section teacher is all you need.

There will also be printable PDFs in the classroom page for each class as well as popcorn word booklets for you learner to print out, color and cut, and put together to practice reading.

***My Business Policy***

REFUNDS:
Every class is set to a limited refund policy. This means that a full refund will be provided if you cancel, unsubscribe, or withdraw from the class within 24 hours of your purchase OR up to a week in advance of the class. After this period of time, no refunds will be issued.

Refunds will not be issued for any case of a student no-show in which the student misses class. My schedule holds a dedicated spot for your child each week. In the event that your child misses class, your payment is a reservation of that time that cannot otherwise be utilized by, scheduled for, or transferred to another student. Additionally; no refunds or makeup classes will be issued for class time lost due to students/parents being unprepared for class. Please read the full class description before enrolling to ensure you can be fully prepared come class start time.

TRANSFERS:
Transfer requests will be accepted if the request is sent no less than 24 hours prior to the class start time and only for ongoing courses. If you have something come up and cannot make your section time, please send me a transfer request as soon as possible for another time during that same week. In the event of a one-time transfer and you would like your child moved back to their original section day/time, you need to send another transfer request or your child will stay in the current section.

There will be no transfers for student no shows under any circumstances.

STUDENT NO-SHOWS:
A student no-show is defined as a student absence with no prior arrangements made with me.
There will be no refunds or transfers for student no-shows under any circumstances.

In cases of no-shows for private classes or classes that happen to only have one learner, it is Outschool's policy that the class is automatically cancelled if no student shows up after 10 minutes have elapsed and you forfeit your payment for that class. If you have a private class with me, ALWAYS reach out before class starts if there is a reason you cannot make it.

If you experience a family emergency at the last minute that requires you to miss class, please contact Outschool via support@outschool.com in terms of refunds, etc. for this kind of situation.

MAKEUP CLASSES:
Makeup classes are not offered at this time due to varying schedules.

OUTSCHOOL POLICIES:
Only the enrolled student is permitted into the classroom and allowed to be on screen and participating in the class. Students may share a screen if and only if they are both enrolled into the class and in that section. Friends, cousins, parents, siblings, etc. are not permitted to be on screen at all.

When entering your Zoom meeting, please make sure that your screen name matches your learner's name on the roster OR the enrolling parent's name on their profile. Any other names will not be admitted into the classroom due to safety and privacy concerns. If we as teachers cannot verify who is entering, it is against policy to admit them.

Every student must turn on their video for teachers to verify that there is in fact, a child, in the classroom due to privacy and safety concerns. If you prefer your child not be on camera, you need to contact Outschool prior to the class to be "verified" beforehand. Refusing to turn on your camera for teachers to verify a child will result in removal from the Zoom meeting immediately.

Only one Zoom account will be admitted into the classroom per student. All Zoom meetings are recorded. Parents and/or guardians are not authorized to watch the class from a second device, but all classroom recordings are available in the classroom page for your viewing after the class has concluded. Some recordings may be deleted if something inappropriate happens during the lesson i.e. nudity or offensive behavior.
學習目標
Students will improve their understanding of consonant and short vowel sounds while learning the basics of independent reading. They will also learn to recognize key sight words in the English language.

其他詳情

父母的引導和規範
This class uses NearPod, which is a separate online resource. Parents and/or guardians, please read the announcements page prior to class to get your learner set up before class begins. Your learner may also need help throughout the lesson to complete the games and use the features. This class is for very young learners who may not fully understand how to click on a computer or set up NearPod on their own. Each class will require the use of NearPod. I will send out the specific link and code within the hour prior to the class start time as a classroom post. NearPod is necessary to participate and will be your child's favorite part of class! Please come to class prepared, ideally with a 2nd device. Use one device for Zoom (laptop/computer) and one device for NearPod (iPad/tablet/phone).
供應清單
NEARPOD:

NearPod is an interactive, online resource that we use for class. NearPod includes games relevant to the lesson to keep learners engaged the entire time since there is something for them to be focusing on and physically doing every few minutes. This can include little quizzes, matching, drag & drop, drawing, 3D, virtual reality, etc.

NearPod is necessary for your learner to participate in addition to Zoom.

If available, two devices is ideal for these classes. Most of my students like to have Zoom up on one device and NearPod on a touch device such as a tablet, iPad, or smartphone to make clicking on answers easy for little fingers.
However, two separate devices is NOT necessary to participate if not available!
