"Citizen of the Day" is an original story, written by Eddie Rivera, the teacher of this class, and is one of a collection of stories involving a young boy, about the same age as my learners. In this story, young "Eddie" works to earn a student award. We'll leave it at that. The stories are relatable to the everyday lives of young, inquisitive learners. I have been a kindergarten teacher in the LA Unified School District, and I also worked in summer camps for a few years out of college. I currently work as a professional writer/journalist. Each of those work experiences involved storytelling.
The class is friendly and comfortable. I make it a point to interact personally at least once or twice with each student during the class. Participation is encouraged but not mandated. Learners are able to contribute as much or as little as they would like. I find that with most classes, by the end of the story, all of the students are engaged and happily singing along.
