課堂經歷
In this course, we will read through 28 different MathStart books from levels 2 and 3 and complete projects and activities related to the stories. These books are rich with learning about mathematical concepts of all kinds. Examples include: angles, operations, measurement, calendar, geometry, algebra, probability, skip counting, symmetry, timelines, and so much more! Each day you will receive a video with an interactive and enthusiastic read aloud of the story. Students are encouraged to act out some of the scenes while they listen just like I do in the reading. Throughout the week, we will share our favorite stories with one another through video posts and do projects and photo scavenger hunts to illustrate some of the concepts from the stories. Students can expect to share photos of their projects and scavenger hunt items related to the book as a fun way to interact in the classroom and with one another. We will also make challenges for one another to solve. In addition, I will introduce students to some fun and free math games on abcya.com that we can play together and share. Here is a breakdown of the stories and projects: Week 1: Animals on Board (add up our favorite toys) Elevator Magic Get Up and Go! (time our morning routines) Give Me Half! Let's Fly a Kite (make paper snowflakes with symmetry) Mall Mania More or Less (number guessing game) Week 2: 100 Days of Cool Pepper's Journal (make a class calendar) Probably Pistachio The Sundae Scoop (ice cream party!) Spunky Monkeys on Parade Super Sand Castle Saturday (footstep measuring around the house) Tally O'Malley Week 3: Betcha! (tiny treasures guessing game) Dave's Down-to-Earth Rock Shop The Grizzly Gazette (your family's favorite colors pie chart) Earth Day- Hooray! The Penny Pot (your own shop with printable pennies) Game Time Dinosaur Deals (make your own trading cards) Week 4: Hamster Champs Divide and Ride (stuffed animal roller coaster) Less Than Zero Missing Mittens (odds and evens scavenger hunt) Too Many Kangaroo Things to Do! Ready, Set, Hop! Safari Park (your own carnival with tickets) You do not need to have the MathStart series as I will share them in class. These books are being used with permission. I have been homeschooling for 10+ years using this method of real life learning to make abstract concepts come to life for my students. Through the MathStart stories in this class, students will be exposed to a wide variety of mathematical ideas. Combine that with the hands on projects, and students will come away with practical experience of these ideas. Also, it is a lot of FUN, and when students have fun learning the knowledge sticks with them!
