In this course, students will engage in math talks through many different activities. Math talks are a great way for students to develop number sense and mathematical thinking necessary for today's mathematics. The Common Core Mathematics focuses on the Standards for Mathematical Practice. The idea behind these mathematical thinking and practices is to give students the tools they need to solve problems and to become lifelong, independent learners. These skills are developed throughout a student’s math education throughout the years and are critical to a student's success at math. The Standards for Mathematical Practice are as follows: - Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. - Reason abstractly and quantitatively. - Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. - Model with mathematics. - Use appropriate tools strategically. - Attend to precision. - Look for and make use of structure. - Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Each class in this ongoing course will focus on developing these skills in students. Each week's class will follow the same format of games and problems but with different themes/problems. Topics covered include counting, subitizing and composing numbers, shapes, patterns, addition and subtraction, graphs and data, word problem strategies. Each class will have different activities including songs and games like "What doesn’t belong?", "Splat!", "Would you rather?", "Spot It", "Math Riddles, "Think and Talk pictures" and many more! Each class will touch on a variety of mathematical skills and does not build on previous week's lesson. Each class is independent. Specific lessons never repeat and you can remain enrolled as long as you want! Mathematical skills addressed in throughout this class (each skill might not be discussed in each class but the majority will be): - Fluently adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies - Comparing two and three digit numbers - Adding within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction - Adding two digit numbers and 10 or 100 more/less of numbers - Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones, and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds. - Using addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknowns in all positions. - Using addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns - Reading numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. - Reasoning with shapes and their attributes.
學習目標
Students will be able to count and compare numbers, represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction, work with numbers within 1000 to understand place value, identify and describe shapes, analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes, and represent and interpret data.

I am an elementary school librarian at a preK-grade 2 school. Before that, I was a first grade teacher for 6 years with other teaching experience in grades 2-4. During over 10 years of elementary teaching experience, I have taught math to many students. I think a strong foundation of number sense and mathematical thinking at a young age is crucial to future mathematical success. Math talks with fun activities were one of the best ways I found to achieve this goal!
