In this story time math class, learners will hear the story "The Lost Button" from Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel. Then they will learn what an attribute is and how objects can be sorted in different ways. They will play an attribute guessing game called "Guess My Button!" where they will figure out which button the teacher is thinking of by asking questions about attributes (i.e. size, color, shape, and number of holes). Sorting and classifying by attributes is an important early mathematical skill. Attributes, or characteristics used to describe an object, help learners sort objects and determine similarities and differences between objects. Mathematical learning for young children happens naturally as they engage in the world around them. Classifying and sorting activities are important for numerical concepts and grouping numbers and sets when they're older and helps them learn to apply logical thinking to objects, mathematical concepts and every day life in general. In this class, learners will be challenged to use reasoning to sorting (and thus eliminate) the buttons by different attributes to determine the correct button.

I saw how important a strong foundation of mathematical thinking is for students. I used sorting and classifying activities, and many other tools, to help build my students' mathematical thinking.
