This Level D Guided Reading course is designed for beginning readers in kindergarten or first grade that could benefit from extra practice with reading, sight words, and phonics skills. My goal is to help early readers gain confidence in their skills in an engaging and relaxed environment by providing an encouraging space to explore letter sounds, sight words, and readers. By keeping these classes small I am able to give each student the opportunity to participate throughout class and practice reading independently.

Level D is a great place for your reader if they:
Can process texts with fewer repeating language patterns
Notice and use different punctuation and read dialogue
Can self correct
Can solve many two syllable words

You will find these characteristics in our Level D books:
Picture books
Familiar, easy content, ideas, and themes
Simple dialogue
Longer sentences (more than 6 words)
Words with apostrophes (simple contractions and possessives)
Here is an example of text from our reader, “Is It a Chicken?”: (Page 1) This is a chick. Chicks hatch from eggs. What other animals hatch from eggs? (Page 2) What is in this egg? Is it a chicken? No, it is a duck. (Page 3) Is this a chicken egg? No it is a alligator egg.

I also offer Levels A, B, and C.

Each class has three components: 
A) Sight Word Practice: We will go over a new sight word at the beginning of each class. Students will work together to complete activities with the sight word, and they will practice writing the word. We will also write a sentence using the sight word.
B) Guided Reading: Each class will feature a new short story. We will start by making connections with the text and doing a picture walk. Students will practice reading the story together. We will go over any challenging words. Once the learners have had the opportunity to read through the text together, they will practice reading one at a time to work on fluency. 
C) Word Work: At the end of each class (if time allows) we will work on different phonics skills including beginning and ending sounds and blending words.

I will post a printable copy of the readers we read in class as well as sight word practice sheets each week. These are optional, and can be used for extra practice outside of class.

Students will need pencil/paper OR white board/dry erase marker.

Week of August 1:
Sight Words: get, know
Word Work: long vowel sounds

Week of August 8:
Sight Words: will, from
Word Work: long vowel sounds

Week of August 15:
Sight Words: how, they
Word Work: long vowel sounds

Week of August 22:
Sight Words: put, many
Word Work: long vowel sounds

Week of August 29:
Sight Words: saw, here
Word Work: long vowel sounds

Week of September 5:
Sight Words: saw, here
Word Work: long vowel sounds

Week of September 12:
Sight Words: going, small
Word Work: -ing

Week of September 19:
Sight Words: make, get
Word Work: vowel sounds
