This Book club is discussion based, focusing on JRR Tolkien's book "The Fellowship of the Ring." Learners will need to have their own copy of the book or audiobook. Learners are encouraged to contribute to class through group discussions, asking questions, participating in kahoot review games, and giving short reflections on the readings. All Tolkien fans age 11 and older are welcome to join this book club! It is important that learners read (or at least skim and be aware of key events) from applicable chapters before each class. The instructor will guide learners through the readings, leading discussion on events within the chapter and how they relate to theme, character development, world-building, the history of Middle Earth, and plot. We will also examine the life and times of JRR Tolkien and the influences that shaped his writings. The class schedule is as follows: Class 01: Author study and Chapters 1 & 2 "A Long-Expected Party", "The Shadow of the Past" Class 02: Chapters 3 & 4 "Three is a Company" & "A Short Cut to Mushrooms" Class 03: Chapters 5 & 6 "A Conspiracy Unmasked" & "The Old Forest" Class 04: Chapters 7, 8, 9 "In the House of Tom Bombadil", "Fog on the Barrow Downs", and "At the Sign of the Prancing Pony" Class 05: Chapters 10, 11, 12 "Strider", "A Knife in the Dark", and "Flight to the Ford" Class 06: (Part II of the book) Chapters 1 & 2 "Many Meetings", "The Council of Elrond" Class 07: Chapters 3, 4, 5 "The Ring Goes South", "A Journey in the Dark" , "The Bridge of Khazad-Dum" Class 08: Chapters 6, 7, 8 "Lothlorien", "The Mirror of Galadriel", "Farewell to Lorien" Class 09: Chapters 9 & 10 "The Great River", "The Breaking of the Fellowship" (*This class is for educational and social purposes. My education includes a BA in History, and an MA in International Relations. I have led and been part of numerous book clubs and have a life-long passion for Tolkien's legendarium. I have an entire bookcase dedicated to Tolkien books and memorabilia, (*including a film poster signed by Sir Ian McKellen, humble flex*). I re-read "Lord of the Rings" at least once per year, and I can recite all three of Peter Jackson's films by heart. I am excited to share my love of Tolkien with others.
