This class is a book club for JRR Tolkien's "The Hobbit". We will read the whole book over the course of 7 weeks and discuss the life of JRR Tolkien, book characters, major events, themes, symbolism, structure, and worldbuilding. This class incorporates elements from English standards of learning into an engaging and dynamic atmosphere. Each week, learners will need to read (or listen via audiobook) to the applicable chapters and answer a short prompt/ reflection question posted to the classroom page. Students will need to read / listen to 3 chapters per week. (For example, for class 01, your learner will need to read chapters 1, 2, & 3, and post a short answer to the prompt on the classroom page before class.) In class, the instructor will facilitate discussion of the week's readings, so learners need to come prepared to discuss, ask questions, and give commentary. In addition to in-class discussions and reflection prompts, learners will be able to test their knowledge of the book and its themes, characters, etc. through kahoot games and friendly competition. Some games will be done during our class session, others will be available for learners to complete outside of class. The instructor will provide access to kahoot games once learners have registered for the class. This is an interactive class. Learners are required to appear on camera for the duration of class. Class sessions are recorded for learner safety and participation, and failure to appear on camera will result in students being withdrawn from the class without a refund. The class schedule is as follows: Class 01: Chapters 1, 2, 3: An Unexpected Party, Roast Mutton, A Short Rest Class 02: Chapters 4, 5, 6: Over Hill and Under Hill, Riddles In The Dark, Out Of The Frying-Pan Into The Fire Class 03: Chapters 7 & 8: Queer Lodgings, Flies And Spiders Class 04: Chapters 9, 10, 11: Barrels Out Of Bond, A Warm Welcome, On the Doorstep Class 05: Chapters 12, 13, 14: Inside Information, Not at Home, Fire and Water Class 06: Chapters 15 & 16: The Gathering Of The Clouds, A Thief In The Night Class 07: Chapters 17,18, 19:The Clouds Burst, The Return Journey, The Last Stage

其他詳情
父母的引導和規範
"The Hobbit" is considered a classic in western children's literature. However, it may a bit of a tough read for younger readers. The language used in the narrative can become very descriptive and difficult for young readers to follow. This class is best suited for students who are high-level readers, ideally 12 years-old or older.
Also, this is a book club. While some students may have seen the films, they are rated PG-13 and will not be viewed in this class. We will only be engaging with the book.
供應清單
Students will need to purchase their own copy of "The Hobbit", and bring it to class with them.

I have a MS in Library Science and a BA in History and Government and Political Philosophy. I have taught several academic courses online to middle and high school students. I am also a life-long fan (and HUGE nerd) of all things Tolkien. I re-read "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" at least once per year, and have read the majority of Tolkien's other works about Middle Earth, or Arthurian Legends.
