Day 1 Using manipulatives, we will explore fractions and practice exercises combining and removing fraction parts. Day 2 Using manipulatives and written fractions, we will add and subtract fractions with and without common denominators. I'm a certified teacher for 4-8 generalist, which includes math. I also have a Master's degree in Education. I have a minor in Business and Business Foundations Certificate from the University of Texas at Austin. I've been teaching and tutoring math since 2004.
Materials: Fun with Fractions worksheet (attached) Scissors Colored pencils or a color printer Paper and pencil Before class, please print the sheet, Fun with Fractions. Using colored pencils color each big section in a different color. For example, all ⅓s are the same color. All 1/2s are the same color, but a different color than the 1/3s. Then, cut out each smaller section. You should have 8 separate small 1/8s, for example. If you have a color printer, you can print out the sheet in color and then cut following the directions above.
