In this ongoing class, students will learn about a different facet of nutrition each week, participate in fun and educational activities, study food labels, and grow to love the science of healthy eating! We will cover topics ranging from whole foods versus processed foods, the digestive system, macronutrients and micronutrients, daily calorie requirements, and more. -Students will learn what nutrients, macro-nutrients, and micro-nutrients are. -Students will learn why we need water, and how it helps with many body processes, including the digestive process. -Students will learn why we need carbohydrates, where we get them from, and how to choose the healthiest carbs. -Students will learn about sugar, and how it can be unhealthy in large amounts. -Students will learn why we need protein, and how to choose foods rich in protein. -Students will learn about the different types of fats, why we need some healthy fats, and that other types of fat have been linked to poor health, high cholesterol and heart disease. -Students will learn about the many types of vitamins and minerals, and which foods provide them. -Students will learn how to read food labels, uncover labeling tricks, and make smart choices based off the nutrition label. -Students will learn about the importance of eating whole, unprocessed foods. -Students will learn the difference between fruits, vegetables and culinary vegetables. -Students will learn about the many health benefits of eating a diet high in plant foods, fruits and veggies. -Students will learn about how plant-based foods benefit the digestive process.
As a health teacher of many years, I have experience teaching nutrition topics to kids in this age range. In fact, before teaching health, I taught both middle school and 5th grade. I enjoy the upper elementary / middle school age range very much and consider it my age range of expertise.
Week of June 13th: a ziploc bag and a rubber band (or tape) Week of June 20th: two bananas, one more ripe than the other Week of June 27th: brown paper bag, scissors, pen or pencil, olive oil or vegetable oil, and a few foods or drinks from the kitchen (most any foods or drinks will work, but a few examples are a carrot, mayonnaise, bread, water, apple juice, potato chip, donut, pizza, broccoli, milk, etc) Week of July 4th: one banana and a vitamin C tablet (or lemon juice) ALTERNATIVELY: paper and pencil or crayons Week of July 18th: n/a Week of July 25th: a few nutrition labels from items in your pantry Week of August 1st: n/a
I use the third-party application Pear Deck frequently in my lessons. Pear Deck is a program that allows learners to interact with the teacher's slides by drawing on them, dragging icons, answering questions, and more. Pear Deck is easy to use and easy to access. During our Zoom meeting, I will put a link to the slides in the Zoom chat. Students will click on it and instantly have access. Students may need an email address to access the Pear Deck slides, but it will not be visible to other learners. We will also occasionally use Gimkit, a game-style quiz for newly acquired knowledge.
