In this lively discussion-based class, learners will face powerful themes including prejudice, racism, persistence, courage, staying true to oneself,  following your passion, fighting non-violently through injustice and many more . This novel is based through plots of realistic fiction and includes items such as World Cup Soccer (Chineses vs. American women), trying to purchase a house, making a deal with a highly acclaimed restaurant for Hank's recipe of burgers and more while the book also includes references to pop culture.  The diverse cast includes people of numerous cultures; Chinese, Chinese American, Mexican, Mexican American, African, African American.
Literary elements such as conflicts, voice, imagery, plot, roadblocks, turning points, climax, characters, settings, figurative language, and vocabulary are all included in our discussions.
