Philis Wheatley was an incredible African woman who was captured and sold into slavery.  She became the first African American to publish a book of poems. She was one of the best-known poets of her time. In this class, students will learn all about her life. They will learn about her early life, her life as a slave and poet. We will have a discussions about how she was able to overcome obstacles and become one of the greatest poets in American History. Students will learn how she was a great example and proved to others that black people are intelligent beings just like people of other races. They will briefly learn about the history of slavery and how African Americans suffered from it. Students will also learn about her later life and how she faced many challenges as a black woman even after her poems were published. We will have a discussion about why Philis Wheatley should be remembered and what we all can learn from her. This lesson will be interactive, and each student will have an opportunity to share their thoughts. This class has the potential to exceed 30 minutes, as I love to give every student the opportunity to speak in class, if they choose to do so.
