Are you passionate about the mysteries of the world, both ancient and modern? Do you yearn for unusual and exciting discussions about other cultures? Are you thirsty for knowledge about the past, and the work we do in the present to learn about it?

Join The Young Adventurers' Society!

Each week, the teacher will choose an article, video, or podcast from a reputable scholarly source for other members to study. Subjects will be diverse and culturally all-encompassing. A few examples include:
- What was family life like in the Roman Empire?
- How did the Ancient Egyptians make mummies?
- Why was Emperor Qin Shi Huang buried with a terracotta army?
- What can we learn about a culture from their cemeteries?
- What are some of the "myths" we perpetuate about people who lived in the Stone Age?
- How did people in the past treat and cure certain diseases?
- New archaeological discoveries in places like Mexico, South Africa, Norway, and beyond!

Ongoing engagement in the class will give students an opportunity to learn about different cultures from all over the world, and incorporate humanities such as history, social studies, ethnography, and anthropology, right alongside sciences such as geology, chemistry, medicine, anatomy, and osteology. Students are welcome to request topics and best efforts will be made to accommodate a wide variety of each student's interests.

学習到達目標

Students will have an opportunity to deep-dive into a variety of topics relating to anthropology and archaeology all over the world, as well as learn more about new subjects based on the interests of others in the group. They will have an opportunity to do additional research based on questions posted with the weekly study material, and practice their speech and debating skills. All discussion closely moderated by the teacher so that every student feels comfortable and safe in being able to express their opinions, or disagree with the opinions of others.

I do my best to ensure that all content is suitable for the age range of the class. It is important for students to approach all subjects with an open-mind. We will discuss practices and beliefs of various cultures -- some from history, and some that are still around today. Approaching these topics with curiosity, a desire to understand, and without judgement is essential. Discussion that arises from certain sessions may address topics that are at the forefront of controversial public/media debate: climate change, science vs. religion, the use of genetically modified organisms, etc. A fact-based approach will be taken when these things come up, though the nature and tone of the discussion will always be respectful. Open group discussion will be a major part of the course, whether through use of the microphone or the chat box tool! It is essential that students complete the required reading/watching/listening of the assigned topic BEFORE class each week, and come to class ready with some comments and questions to help direct the live meeting. The minimum age listed for this course will be strictly enforced - if you have a student below this age, please message the teacher before enrolling.
受講に必要なもの

I have been a lover of archaeology, anthropology, and adventure since I was very young! My desire to learn about the world and people from different backgrounds led me to a BA in Cultural Anthropology, followed by an MA in Bioarchaeology. My studies and career have given me opportunities to do fieldwork in India, Peru, Egypt, South Africa, and throughout Central America! My undergraduate and graduate theses are both published in accredited scientific journals, and I have also written seven published history books or biographies!
