Religion and spirituality fascinate us, whether we are outside observers or active participants. Why do some cultures believe in multiple gods, but others only believe in one? What about cultures that don't believe in gods at all, but instead worship their ancestors? Why are some people such strong believers in the power of magic, and to others it's just something in fairy tales? This course will discuss the role of religion in different cultures across the globe, and put them into an anthropological perspective. Combining geography, history, and cultural anthropology, the goal of the course is to educate students on a variety of cultural practices related to spirituality, and expose them to novel ideas in a curious and open-minded environment. At the end of week 4, students will be given information to put together an optional research project and/or presentation related to the anthropology of religion, on the subject of their choice. Presentations will be given during the last meeting of the class! We will not aim to prove any one faith "right" or "wrong", and the ethics of one religion over another will not be discussed -- it is very important that students enter the course with an open mind and willingness to learn about different cultural practices without the idea of right/wrong, good/bad. The first week of the course will be a discussion on how to approach this! Each week covers different topic, with a rough schedule (subject to change depending on participation and discussion) as follows: 1. The Study of Religion: How we Approach Different Cultures with Open Minds 2. The Origins of Myths 3. Rituals and Religious Symbols: Rites of Passage 4. Shamans & Priests 5. Magic & the Concept of Witchcraft, Part I 6. Magic & the Concept of Witchcraft, Part II 7. Souls, Ghosts, & Death 8. Student Presentations The minimum age limit (11) is a requirement for this course. However, if you have a student close to the minimum age who is interested in the class, please contact me to discuss if the content would be an appropriate fit before enrolling your learner.

I received a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Tulane University, and wrote my Honour's Thesis on funerary and mortuary practices throughout differing cultural groups, and how these practices relate to spirituality and religion. The spiritual beliefs of cultures help us understand a variety of aspects of their daily life, and the secular and anthropological study of all spiritual concepts is, in my view, essential to understanding what makes us a global community.
