Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Class Description:

In this six-session course, students will explore the basics of sentence diagramming and word functions—perfect as an introduction or a refresher. This course lays a strong foundation for more advanced grammar study. As students learn to visualize sentence structure, they gain confidence and improve their writing and communication skills.

A basic familiarity with the parts of speech is recommended. Full mastery isn’t required, but students should have some prior exposure.

We’ll focus on identifying how words function in a sentence—subjects, predicates, modifiers, direct and indirect objects, prepositional phrases, predicate adjectives, and more. Students will learn to diagram sentences to see how these elements fit together.

I’ll use a variety of engaging materials, including PowerPoint presentations, worksheets, collaborative activities, diagramming puzzles, and games.

The course is designed for ages 9–14, but if your learner falls outside that range and you think the class might be a good fit, feel free to reach out!

Each class will build on the last, helping students gradually learn to diagram complete simple sentences with confidence.

Course Schedule:

Class 1: Reviewing the Basics – Subjects and Predicates (simple and compound)

Class 2: Telling More About It – Modifiers (adjectives and adverbs)

Class 3: Receiving the Action – Direct and Indirect Objects

Class 4: Another Way to Say It – Predicate Nouns and Adjectives
(Includes review of action vs. linking verbs)

Class 5: In Relation To – Prepositional Phrases as Modifiers

Class 6: The Extras – Interjections and Spectacular Sentence Diagrams!

Learning Goals

Students will learn to identify the functions of words and phrases in sentences. They will be able to visualize these functions as they learn to place each word and phrase into a sentence diagram.
