In this class, we will use chemistry and creativity to make four different holiday decorations that you can hang on your chemistree, in your windows, or anywhere that needs a festive decoration! In class 1, we will learn about solubility and crystals before making two different types of sparkling crystal ornaments. In class 2, we will learn about chromatography before using what we've learned to make colorful bulbs or snowflakes with chromatography patterns. In class 3, we will learn about polarity and viscosity before using what we've learned to choose materials to make a snow globe. In class 4, we will learn about polymers before making our own milk plastic ornaments and slime-filled ornaments. How class is structured: Each week in the classroom several posts will be made. Post 1: all of that week's videos and PDF files will be uploaded. The first video will explain that week's science concept, while the second video will demonstrate how to complete that week's activity or experiment. Post 2: students will be asked to share their predictions and observations from that week's activity and upload a photo or video of their final results from that week. Post 3: discussion question. Students will read and reply to the discussion question, which will tie together the science that was talked about that week and the actual experiment that they did. They will be expected to provide either a written or video reply to contribute to that week's discussion. Teacher interaction: In addition to uploading the content each week and providing timely responses to questions about the activity procedures, I will provide comments on student predictions and observations and ask follow-up questions as necessary. I will also moderate the discussion question by answering questions, providing feedback, and steering the conversation in a way that encourages collaborative learning and community building.

Most students will require assistance with the experiments. Weeks 1 and 4 both involve heating liquids (water and milk) so caution should be taken to ensure that adequate adult supervision is provided.
Links to unlisted YouTube videos will be used to deliver instructor-created course content. This does not require any registration or account.
受講に必要なもの
All videos are created by the instructor and PDFs of handouts are provided. Supplies will be necessary for each week's experiment and a full shopping list will be provided at least 1 week before the start of class. Most supplies are commonly found in the home or readily available at grocery and big box stores.

I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with almost two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and four years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never-ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
