週あたり 1-2 時間. Students will have activities to complete each week to reinforce course content. Activities will include a hands-on activity and optional questions about that week's topic to reinforce the concepts learned and help continue the learning throughout the week. I include an answer key for the homework in the handouts so students can self-check or check their answers with an adult. They are also welcome to message me their answers for feedback.
テスト
If you are interested in weekly assessments that you can do at home then submit to me for a grade, please contact me within the first week of class. These are optional.

このクラスで学べること

英語レベル - 不明
Intermediate - Advanced レベル向け
Learn about the world of chemistry beyond just the names of the elements of the periodic table- we'll do activities like build models of covalent molecules, learn how to name some common compounds, make and test our own conductivity meters, and observe signs of a chemical reaction.

This class is specifically designed for advanced learners who are ready to dive deeper into chemistry topics beyond just the basics of the elements- but aren't quite to the level of a high school chemistry class yet. If you have questions or concerns about the level of content covered, please feel free to contact me.

Each session will be a mixture of instructor-led lecture, student discussion/questions, and a hands-on activity. There will be a weekly at-home activity that students will do between class meetings- they can share their results in the classroom or via message with the instructor, and we'll briefly discuss the results at the beginning of the next session.

I will provide (optional but highly encouraged) worksheets for students who wish to practice the skills that we learn outside of class- these are highly recommended to get the most out of the course, but absolutely not required.

Weekly Schedule:
Week 1- Matter and Phase Changes
In-Class Activity: modeling states of matter
At-Home Activity: phase changes in your kitchen

Week 2- The Atom and Subatomic Particles
In-Class Activity: identify which subatomic particle is being described
At-Home Activity: just how small is an atom?

Week 3 The Periodic Table- Part 1- Isotopes and the Basics of the Periodic Table
In-Class Activity: color coding the periodic table for metals/nonmetals/metalloids
At-Home Activity: properties of metals and nonmetals, build an isotope

Week 4- The Periodic Table- Part 2- Groups of the Periodic Table
In-Class Activity: color coding the periodic table for groups
At-Home Activity: periodic table of toys

Week 5- Ionic Compounds
In-Class Activity: sort common compounds as ionic or covalent
At-Home Activity: build and test a conductivity meter

Week 6- Covalent Compounds
In-Class Activity: naming some common covalent compounds
At-Home Activity: build models of simple covalent compounds

Week 7- Chemical Reactions
In-Class Activity: observe signs of a chemical reaction in demonstrations
At-Home Activity: do several simple reactions and record observations

Week 8- Acids and Bases
In-Class Activity: sorting properties of acids and bases
At-Home Activity: make and test a pH indicator

Students will have hands-on activities to complete at home each week- some of these may require parent supervision/assistance- depending on your level of comfort. The only chemicals that will be used will be things that are commonly found in the kitchen- baking soda, vinegar, soap, salt, and other similar compounds. A full supply list will be available 2 weeks prior to class beginning. There will be videos provided for the at-home activity for some weeks- these will be unlisted YouTube videos and no account registration is required to view them. They will be embedded in the classroom.

受講に必要なもの
One week prior to the start of the course I will provide a pdf of all class activities (over 90 pages- assignments, and note-taking sheets) in pdf format if requested and paid in full. I provide this as an option because I know that some families like printing out an entire class at once. The supplies required for hands-on activities will be provided prior to the course starting- but estimated cost for supplies assuming you have none of them already is approximately $15 for the entire course.

I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with over two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and over five years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
