History Herald: Rulers of Old: Kings, Queens, Pharaohs, Emperors, Presidents, & More! In this ongoing class, students will travel back in time and learn about ancient rulers and leading leaders of different cultures and periods. Extra! Extra! Come learn all about it! Come join us for a weekly history adventure as we explore the rulers of the past. Each week, the students will be introduced to a new ruler, the area they ruled over, and the greatest accomplishments or failures of the past leader. We will look into the lives of each ruler- what do we know about their childhood, how did they come to power, how did they rule, how did they treat their people, what accomplishments or failures in governing did they have, and what accomplishments did they have in advancing their societies. Each section is independent, so students can choose which weeks they would like to attend. Every class will be an interactive history adventure to introduce your children to some of history's most famous and infamous rulers. Did you know that Julius Caesar created a massive empire? Did you know that Henry VIII had 6 wives? Did you know that Cleopatra defeated her brother to become queen? Did you know that Kublai Khan conquered China? Did you know that Charlemagne was the first Holy Roman Emperor? Did you know that Tutankhamun became pharaoh when he was only 9 years old? Each week, students will be engaged through an interactive presentation, activity, and group collaboration! Students will be given a handout to create an encyclopedia entry. Students are encouraged to keep them from each week allowing them to create their own history book of all the leaders they learned about. No prior knowledge is needed as this class is for all levels who want to learn more about the past! Each week will break down as such: Introductions and Greetings Ruler Introduction- What do we know? Presentation of ruler and culture via slides Small activity to reinforce information Closing with quick facts quiz and/or student's thoughts So come join us for an adventure as we learn about the people who ruled and their places! ~~~~~~~WEEKLY SCHEDULE~~~~~~ Week of May 1- Mansa Musa Week of May 8- Queen Ranavalona the I Week of May 15-Amelia Earhart Week of May 22- Emperor Timur of the Timurid Empire Week of May 29-Olga the Wise Week of June 5- Jane Goodall Week of June 12- Ashoka the Great Week of June 19- Raphael- "Prince of Painters" Week of June 26- Grigory Rasputin Week of July 3- NO CLASS - SUMMER BREAK UNTILL FALL SEMESTER Subject List: Round One- Week One: Julius Caesar and Rome Week Two: Attila the Hun Week Three: Queen Elizabeth I Week Four: Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire Week Five: Akbar and India Week Six: Tutankhamun and Egypt Week Seven: William the Conqueror and France Week Eight: Kublai Khan and Mongolia Week Nine: Robert the Bruce and Scotland Week Ten: Cyrus the Great and Persia Week Eleven: Bjorn Ironside and the Norse Week Twelve: Napoleon Bonaparte and France Week Thirteen: Cleopatra of Egypt Week Fourteen: Leonidas and Sparta Week Fifteen: Henry VIII and England Week Sixteen: George Washington and the U.S. Week Seventeen: Shaka and the Zulu Week Eighteen: Mary Queen of Scots Week Nineteen: Abraham Lincoln of the U.S. Week Twenty: Martin Luther King, Jr. Round Two: Week One - Vlad the Impaler Week Two- Justinian Week Three- Catherine the Great of Russia Week Four- Nelson Mandela Week Five – Adolf Hitler Week Six- Boudicca - Queen of the Iceni Week Seven- Marquis de Lafayette Week Eight- Ivan the Terrible Week Nine- Joan of Arc Week Ten- Empress Theodora Week Elven- Hannibal Barca Week Twelve- Gandhi Week Thirteen- Emperor Caligula Week Fourteen - Leonardo Da Vinci Week Fifteen – Harriet Tubman Week Sixteen- Margaret Thatcher Week Seventeen- George III Week Eighteen- Vladimir Putin Week Nineteen- Elizabeth II Week Twenty- Queen Victoria Round Three: Week One - Ludwig van Beethoven Week Two- Louis 16th of France Week Three- Emperor Claudius Week Four- Joseph Stalin Week Five – Mother Teresa Week Six- Alexander Hamilton Week Seven- Galileo Galilei Week Eight- Chiefs Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse Week Nine- William Shakespeare Week Ten- Queen Hatshepsut Week Elven- Empress Wu Zetian Week Twelve- Mansa Musa Week Thirteen- Queen Ranavalona the I Week Fourteen - Amelia Earhart Week Fifteen – Emperor Timur of the Timurid Empire Week Sixteen- Olga the Wise Week Seventeen- Jane Goodall Week Eighteen- Ashoka the Great Week Nineteen- Raphael- "Prince of Painters" Week Twenty- Grigory Rasputin Note regarding rounds, we will continue to cycle through these 3 rounds so students could technically join at any point in a section and stay 60 weeks without repeating. Please note that there may be some sensitive topics that will be addressed throughout the course including but not limited to: genocide and sectional violence depending on the ruler discussed. All information given will be delivered in an age-appropriate way in order to be factual but respectful of their developmental processes. I have been challenging and elevating students for over 10 years to delve deeply into the issues of our past and wrestle with the realities of our present and future. Each conversation will be open and honest but guided with the necessary care for students of this age. I believe it is our job as educators to not teach children what to think- but how to think and allow them to unearth the truths that are often hidden within the words of pages.
