The History Herald: Myths & Legends Club- World Cultures Stories & Discussion

In this ongoing class, students will be introduced to world cultures through reading the myths and legends of days of old. From Creation Myths to Heroes - Come join us for a literacy adventure around the world.

If you are into reading stories about gods and goddesses, monsters and heroes, and tales of how things came to be, then this is the class for you! Come learn about the "real" heroes and monsters from the myths of the past!

Students will be introduced via story and lesson about world cultures by bringing the tales of old myths and legends to life. Brief introductions about a country/culture will be given via presentation. Then we will do an "Immortal Scoop" highlighting one god, goddess, or hero from the mythology of this culture. Students will learn about this figure, their importance, purpose, and powers.

Students are encouraged to use the handout to keep track of the fascinating deities and heroes that are covered!

Then short myths (1-3 depending on length of myth) will be read to the student from one culture, while visuals and activities are presented.

Then the class will engage in class discussion to talk about the culture of the people who created the story. This discussion will activate creative thinking processes and historical connections that the child is familiar with.

We will end each class with a group discussion to solidify the information gained.

Students are encouraged to takes notes, draw, and create their own Immortal Scoop Handout provided upon enrollment. Students are encouraged to share their work if they would like to do so at the end of class.

This is going to be a literary adventure around the world- grab your magic carpet and join us for a ride!

I have been challenging and elevating students for over 10 years to delve deeply into the issues of our past and wrestle with the realities of our present and future. Each conversation will be open and honest but guided with the necessary care for students of this age. I believe it is our job as educators to not teach children what to think- but how to think and allow them to unearth the truths that are often hidden within the words of pages.
