Whether your learner is a reluctant learner who feels confused by science - or is an advanced student fueled by curiosity: All are welcome as we dive into High School Biology! We will study Biology together - but my hope is that your learner will look at the world with greater admiration and wonder by the end of the course. In the SPRING Semester, the course will include traditional anatomy/dissection, dissection alternatives will be used in preparation for or in place of dissection. You have the option to take a separate lab course that complements the lecture course. Fall Labs include microscope work. In this course, we'll start with scientific methods and how scientific theories are formed before moving on to the fundamental components of life. We'll then examine ecosystems and biomes to understand what sustains life. Afterwards, we'll focus on cells, moving from the microscopic world to genetics and cellular energy. For a few weeks, we'll study genetics, before covering observable evolution and classification. Finally, we'll end the semester with prokaryotes and viruses. During this course, learners will learn about traditional biological concepts, while being prompted to ask questions and explore current topics in biology. The lessons will include videos, lectures, interactive notebook resources, and online activities to aid their understanding. This course does not require a particular Biology textbook. Instead, it covers topics that supplement those found in traditional Biology textbooks like CK-12 or similar. There are a couple of lab options available: - full semester course option will go alongside class studies - a la carte lab series offered throughout the year on different topics (Ex: "Biology Lab Essentials") *Some lab suggestions will be given in class, to support hands-on experience of study. Science of life Week 1: The Study of Life (Characteristics of Life) / Scientific Method Chemistry of Life Week 2: Composition of Matter (Atoms, Molecules, Elements & Chemical Bonds) Week 3: Properties of Water (Water, Carbon, Lipids, Proteins & Enzymes) Ecology Week 4: Energy & Life/ Biosphere Week 5: Ecosystems & Biomes / Populations & Communities Cell Structure & Function Week 6: Cell Structure & Cell Wall Week 7: Membranes (osmosis & diffusion) Cellular Energy Week 8: Photosynthesis Week 9: Cellular Respiration DNA, Protein & The Cell Cycle Week 10: DNA, Genes & Chromosomes Week 11: Cell Cycle & Cellular Respiration Genetics Week 12: Mendelian Genetics & Inheritance Patterns Week 13: Human Genetics & Gene Technology Evolution Week 14: Competition Week 15: Biological Classification Prokaryotes & Viruses Week 16: Archaea & Bacteria Week 17: Viruses Week 18: Choice Topic *Based on learner interest.

For the past seven years, I have been teaching online and homeschooling my own children for five years. Additionally, I have gained experience teaching and working with youth through various activities such as camp and afterschool programs, ski instructing, working in a 6-1-1 school, and teaching biology at Co-op. By teaching online, I am able to use my science knowledge in unique ways, making even the most challenging subjects more interesting. I like to present information in different ways and simplify complex ideas into memorable terms.
I aim to support your student in building confidence and practical skills through guidance in their studies. Although books have their uses, nothing compares to the benefits of hands-on learning and witnessing the marvels of Biology. My love for Biology stems from its deceptive simplicity, which upon deeper examination reveals a truly astounding complexity.
My area of study is Biology, and I hold a Bachelor of Science degree where I learned about mammallogy, ornithology, ecology, microbiology, histology, aquatic invertebrates. In my co-op lab classes, I gained hands-on experience with microscopes and learned how to create slides rather than just viewing prepared ones. I am now providing microscope classes through Outschool, where students are encouraged to use their compound or digital microscopes during open lab time. I utilize digital cameras to share my own microscope view, as well as encourage students' to share their microscope view. While I value traditional lab techniques, I also believe that technology can enhance the lab experience when appropriate.
*We will follow study of traditional biology topics that are observable, we will briefly cover topic that are considered theories or are debated. The main focus of class will be observational biology.
