Biology covers a variety of topics. It is hard to look at the world the same after you have learned just how intricate and fascinating it is! We will begin our journey in the Spring Semester starting small with micro protists and fungi. (Sounds "fun" right? ha ha) Next we will go green with plants. The majority of this semester will focus on studying ANIMALS : ) First, invertebrates: arthropods, and insects. Next, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The semester will end with a look at animal behavior and conservationism. *Mid-semester and Final class are based on student choice and interest. Throughout the course learners will be introduced to traditional biological concepts, encouraged to ask questions, and explore current topics in biology. Learners are encouraged to share their interests, allowing them to be incorporated into lessons and opportunity for further study. Basic research and reading of scientific literature/ websites is encouraged. With the study of animals, there are opportunities to readily apply their learning to the world around them. Lessons will consist of video, lecture, interactive notebook resources and various online interactive activities to support their understanding. There is not a required text for this course, however topics align with standard of traditional biology course (for example CK-12). There are a couple of lab options available: - full semester course option will go alongside class studies - a la carte lab series offered throughout the year on different topics Protists & Fungi Week 1: Classes of Protists - Animal-like, Fungus-like & Plant-like, Week 2: Classes of Fungi Plant Diversity & Reproduction Week 3: Classifying Plants Week 4: Angiosperms Plant Structure & Function Week 5: Plant Anatomy & Physiology Week 6: Transporting Water & Nutrients/ Plant Growth Animals - Invertebrates Part 1 Week 7: Characteristics of Animals Week 8: Diversity of Invertebrates Week 9: Choice Topic *Based on student interest. Animals - Invertebrates Part 2 Week 10: Arthropods Week 11: Insects Animals - Chordates Part 1 Week 12: Characteristics of Vertebrates/ Fish Week 13: Amphibians Week 14: Reptiles Animals - Chordates Part 2 Week 15: Birds Week 16: Mammals Week 17: Animal Behavior Week 18: Choice Topic: Conservation & Environmental Impact *Based on student interest.
